Species - GCSE Biology Definition

In biology, a species is a group of similar organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring. Members of the same species share similar characteristics and are more closely related to each other than to organisms in other species. For example, all domestic cats belong to the same species because they can mate and their offspring can also reproduce. Scientists use species as a basic unit for classifying and studying the diversity of life on Earth.
