Multitasking - GCSE Computer Science Definition

Multitasking in computer science means a computer is able to perform multiple tasks or processes at the same time. For example, you can listen to music while typing up an essay and also have a web browser open. This is possible because the computer’s operating system switches quickly between different programs, giving each one a little bit of processing time so they all appear to run smoothly together. This helps us to do many things at once without having to stop what we are doing completely, making our everyday use of computers much more efficient.
