Saturated & Unsaturated Compounds (Cambridge (CIE) IGCSE Combined Science): Revision Note

Exam code: 0653

Saturated & unsaturated Compounds

What are saturated compounds?

  • Saturated compounds are molecules with only single carbon-carbon bonds (C-C)

    • Each carbon atom has 4 single bonds to another atoms

  • Alkanes are examples of saturated compounds

  • Alkanes have the general formula CnH2n+2

  • The first three alkanes are:

  1. Methane, CH4

methane
  1. Ethane, C2H6

ethane
  1. Propane, C3H8

propane

What are unsaturated compounds?

  • Unsaturated compounds are molecules with one or more carbon-carbon double bonds (C=C)

    • Each carbon atom has 4 bonds to other atoms

    • But, one bond is a double bond

  • Alkenes are examples of unsaturated compounds

  • Alkenes have the general formula CnH2n

  • The first three alkenes are:

  1. Ethene, C2H4

ethene
  1. Propene, C3H6

propene
  1. Butene, C4H8

but-1-ene

Richard Boole

Reviewer: Richard Boole

Expertise: Chemistry Content Creator

Richard has taught Chemistry for over 15 years as well as working as a science tutor, examiner, content creator and author. He wasn’t the greatest at exams and only discovered how to revise in his final year at university. That knowledge made him want to help students learn how to revise, challenge them to think about what they actually know and hopefully succeed; so here he is, happily, at SME.
