Are you curious about the world around you—how volcanoes erupt, why people migrate, or how cities grow? If so, IGCSE Geography could be the perfect subject for you!
In this article, I’ll explain exactly what IGCSE Geography is, the difference between the Cambridge (CIE) and Edexcel courses, what you’ll study, how you’ll be assessed, and how this subject can open up exciting future opportunities.
Whether you’re choosing your options or have already started the course, this guide will help you get your head around what to expect and how to succeed.
What is IGCSE Geography?: Quick Summary
IGCSE Geography is a two-year International General Certificate of Secondary Education (opens in a new tab)usually taken by students aged 14–16. It explores physical and human geography—studying everything from natural hazards to population change—and helps you understand how people interact with the environment.
Offered by both Cambridge (CIE) and Edexcel exam boards, the IGCSE includes a mix of theory, case studies, and fieldwork.
The Edexcel course is assessed through written final exams.
In the Cambridge (CIE) course you have two options
Option 1: 100% written exam assessment by completing Papers 1, 2 and 4
Option 2: combine a written exam and fieldwork by completing papers 1 and 2 together with a fieldwork submission.
IGCSE Geography is ideal for students who want to make sense of the world around them and develop analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Why Study Geography at IGCSE?
Geography is one of the most exciting and relevant subjects you can take. The world is constantly changing, and geography helps you understand why.
You’ll explore real-world issues like climate change, migration, resource management, and natural disasters—all topics that affect your life and your future.
Beyond that, studying IGCSE Geography develops a wide range of transferable skills that are valued in many careers.
You’ll learn how to read maps, analyse data, build strong arguments, and make informed decisions. These skills are just as useful in business and politics as they are in science and the environment.
Most of all, geography gives you a sense of place. It helps you see the bigger picture, ask the right questions, and think like a global citizen.
What Does IGCSE Geography Cover?
IGCSE Geography covers both physical and human geography, as well as geographical skills. Here’s a snapshot of the topics you’ll study:
Physical Geography:
Natural hazards, including earthquakes, volcanoes and tropical storms
Weather, climate, and ecosystems like rainforests and hot deserts
Human Geography:
Population and migration
Resource management (water, food and energy)
Geographical Skills:
Fieldwork and enquiry-based learning
You can explore these in more depth in our IGCSE Geography Revision Notes
How is IGCSE Geography Assessed?
