Key Trends from 2024
1. Some courses are extremely competitive
Courses linked to healthcare are the hardest to get into.
Dentistry had 1,777 applicants but only 104 offers.
Medicine had 2,830 applicants for 676 offers.
This means lots of people apply, but only a small number get places, usually because there are limited spaces and very high entry requirements
2. Arts and humanities make offers to most applicants
Subjects like History, English, Politics, and Geography offered places to most people who applied. For example:
History: 915 applications, 854 offers.
English: 646 applications, 589 offers.
These courses are less competitive and often focus more on grades and interest in the subject, rather than interviews or extra tests.
3. The top five most popular degree courses are highly specialised
Medical specialisms and law make up the top five degrees in terms of number of applicants who apply.
This might be because applicants are looking beyond their undergraduate degrees. The University of Liverpool offers a huge range of postgraduate specialisms (opens in a new tab), including vaccinology, neurological science, and gastroenterology.
What These Admissions Statistics Mean for Applicants
Liverpool’s admissions statistics show that competition varies a lot by course, so how you should apply depends on what you’re aiming to study.
If you’re applying for highly competitive courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, or Physiotherapy, it’s important to be realistic. Most students applying for these subjects choose backup courses and apply to universities with a range of entry requirements.
For arts, humanities, and some social science courses, the data tends to show less competition. Subjects like History, English, Politics, and Geography make offers to most applicants who meet the grade requirements. This means your predicted grades and personal statement are often more important than interviews or admissions tests.
Choosing courses strategically matters. And, understanding how competitive your subject is can help you balance ambitious choices with safer options. This improves your chances of receiving an offer.

Is the University of Liverpool a Russell Group University?
Yes. The University of Liverpool is a member of the Russell Group. This is a group of leading UK universities known for strong research, teaching quality, and links to employers. Being in the Russell Group often makes a university more competitive, especially for popular courses.
Why do some Liverpool courses have very low offer rates?
Some courses at Liverpool have very low offer rates because they have limited places and high demand. Subjects that require specialist facilities, professional accreditation, and clinical placements tend to be the most competitive. These courses include:
Medicine
Dentistry
Physiotherapy
