When is a subject-focused EE the right choice?

Understanding the subject-focused pathway

  • This pathway is the appropriate choice when you want to investigate a topic through the lens of one specific Diploma Programme (DP) subject

  • You use the concepts, theories, methods and perspectives of that single subject to answer your Research Question (RQ)

  • It is strongly recommended that you choose a subject you are currently studying in the DP

    • This ensures you have the necessary depth of knowledge and understanding to conduct rigorous research

    • If you choose a subject you are not studying, you must ensure you are familiar with the subject from a DP perspective

Including cross-disciplinary subjects

  • This pathway includes two cross-disciplinary subjects which must be taken as single subjects in the subject-focused pathway

    • Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS): focuses on the interaction between environmental systems and human societies

    • Literature and Performance: examines a written text and its transformation into a performance

  • You cannot choose these subjects for the interdisciplinary pathway because they are already cross-disciplinary by nature

    • If your topic combines theatre and literature, choose Literature and Performance as a subject-focused EE

    • If your topic combines geography and biology, consider ESS as a subject-focused EE (depending on your focus)
