A phagocyte is a type of white blood cell that helps protect the body from infection. Its main role is to find and engulf harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. When a phagocyte encounters these pathogens, it surrounds and digests them, breaking them down so they can no longer cause harm. This process is part of the immune system’s response to infection. There are different types of phagocytes, including macrophages and neutrophils, each playing a role in defending the body against pathogens.
