GCSE Exam Resit Dates 202627 Key Dates & Deadlines

Missed the mark the first time around? Don’t worry - GCSE resits are your chance to come back stronger, smarter and more confident.

Whether you’re aiming for that all-important pass or simply want to improve your grade, this guide breaks down everything you need to know about GCSE exam resit dates in 2026.

We’ll cover everything from key dates and deadlines to how to prepare effectively.

When are the GCSE exam resit dates 2026?

GCSE resits are typically held in the November following your GCSE exams and the following summer. The November 2026 session is specifically for English Language and Maths resits, while other subjects can be retaken in May-June the following year alongside the main GCSE exams.

If you’re resitting your GCSEs this summer, you’ll sit the same exams as the students taking them for the first time. You can find a handy GCSE exam timetable here to keep track of when each of your GCSE resit exam dates is.

If you’re resitting your exams in November 2026, here’s when you can expect to sit them.

GCSE Maths resit dates 2026

Maths is one of the most frequently resat GCSE subjects—and for good reason. Achieving a pass can open up lots of doors in education and future careers.

Students aged 16 to 19 on a study programme in the UK who have not achieved at least a Grade 4 in GCSE Maths or English are (opens in a new tab)required by the government to continue studying these subjects (opens in a new tab).

So, as you can imagine, thousands of students resit their maths exams each year.

Here’s when you can expect to sit your GCSE Maths resit in 2026, depending on your exam board:

GCSE resit dates for other subjects

Planning to resit another subject? These will fall into the main summer 2027 series, along with GCSE English Literature and GCSE Science.

Check with your school or college, or consult your exam board’s official timetable to find the dates for each subject.

How to prepare for GCSE resits

If you’re feeling apprehensive about taking any of your GCSE exams again, just know that you’re not alone. Hundreds of thousands of students across England and Wales retake their GCSE exams every year, and many improve on their original grades.

Taking a resit doesn’t mean starting from scratch—it’s your chance to build on what you already know.

Here are some tried and tested ways to improve both your confidence and grades ahead of your resits.

Create a personalised revision timetable

Leaving revision until the last minute and trying to cram as much information as possible in the days leading up to your exams is a mistake that many students make. Instead, plan ahead and create a personalised revision timetable

It’s crucial to structure your time to make sure you’re able to cover all subjects, while prioritising topics that you find the most difficult. This can help you to avoid burnout and retain the content you’re learning.

Refine your revision strategy

The key is understanding why you missed the mark last time, and then adjusting your revision strategy accordingly. Passively rereading through your notes isn’t an effective revision technique. Instead, try to focus on active revision.

Boost retention with strategies like:

What is the deadline for November GCSE resits?

If you're planning to retake Maths or English Language in November 2026, the entry deadline is typically in mid-September.

Check with your school or college to confirm the exact date for your centre, as exam boards have not yet published the entry deadlines.

What is the deadline for summer GCSE resits?

For resits in the May-June 2027 window, you'll need to register by late February or early March 2027. Again, deadlines vary depending on the exam board, so confirm in advance with your school or college.

When is GCSE resit results day 2026?

If you’re taking your GCSE resits this summer, you’ll get your results on GCSE results day, which falls on 20th August 2026.

For November 2026 resits, you’ll get your results in January 2027. The exact date hasn’t yet been announced.

For summer 2027 resits, you can expect to get your resit results on GCSE results day 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times can I resit GCSE exams?

You can resit as many times as you need. There’s no official limit—just make sure each resit is worth it by approaching it with a smart revision plan. It’s also worth noting that you may have to pay depending on the subject and the grade you got.

What happens if I do worse in a GCSE resit?

Don't panic! Your highest grade counts, not your most recent one. So there’s nothing to lose by trying again.

Do you have to pay to resit a GCSE?

If you're under 19 and resitting Maths or English because you didn’t achieve a Grade 4, it's usually free through your school or college. For other subjects or if you’re just trying to improve your grade, fees may apply.

It’s always best to check with your school or college.
