How to prepare for IGCSE resits
If the idea of sitting your IGCSE exams again has you feeling nervous, but remember—you’re not alone. Thousands of students across the globe opt to resit their exams every year, often improving their results the second time around.
Think of an IGCSE resit as an opportunity rather than a setback. It's your chance to build on the knowledge you already have and strengthen your understanding.
Here are some proven ways to boost both your confidence and performance as you gear up for your resits:
Create a tailored revision schedule
Avoid the stress of last-minute cramming by designing a clear, personalised revision schedule early on. Carefully structure your time, ensuring you cover all necessary subjects while giving extra attention to areas where you previously struggled.
This approach helps keep stress levels low, increases retention and ensures you’re thoroughly prepared.
Try out different revision techniques
Identify what went wrong in your previous attempt and tweak your study methods accordingly. Passive revision methods like simply rereading notes won't yield the best results. Instead, enhance your study sessions with active techniques such as:
Active Recall: Regularly test your knowledge using flashcards and quizzes
Past Papers: Frequently practise past exam papers to become familiar with the format and timing
Spaced Repetition: Revisit tricky topics frequently at first, gradually increasing intervals between reviews
Mind Mapping: Visually map out ideas to simplify complex concepts
Teach to Learn: Reinforce your understanding by teaching concepts to friends or study groups

Frequently Asked Questions
How many times can I resit IGCSE exams?
You can resit your IGCSE exams as many times as you like, there’s no formal limit. That said, you’ll have to pay a fee each time you resit (which can be upwards of £200). We’d advise really honing your revision strategy to try to improve your results the second time around.
What happens if I do worse in an IGCSE resit?
Thankfully, resitting your IGCSE exams doesn’t cancel out the first results you achieved. This means if you get a worse grade when resitting, your higher initial grade still stands.
Do you have to pay to resit an IGCSE?
Yes. Unlike GCSE Maths and English resits, which can be funded for students under 19 in the UK, IGCSE resits usually incur exam fees regardless of the subject.
The exact cost can vary depending on your specific exam centre or school, so it's best to check directly with your centre or exams officer.
