What is Learning Outcome 4 and how can students show evidence?

Understanding Learning Outcome 4 (LO4)

  • Learning Outcome 4 (LO4) requires students to demonstrate commitment and perseverance in their CAS experiences

  • This outcome requires you to show regular involvement and active engagement throughout the entire CAS programme

    • Commitment—the act of staying dedicated to a chosen activity or cause over an extended period of time

    • Perseverance—the ability to continue with an experience even when it becomes difficult or when your motivation drops

  • Meeting this outcome means staying involved in a variety of activities regularly rather than rushing to complete them in short periods

Demonstrating perseverance through long-term involvement

  • Long-term involvement—continuous or ongoing actions that take place regularly over an extended duration

  • Sustained experiences provide more opportunities for you to show how you overcome specific obstacles

  • You should demonstrate that you can adapt to uncertainties and unexpected changes in your plans

  • A successful student will foresee potential challenges and consider valid alternatives or contingencies

    • Contingencies—alternative plans or back-up strategies created to handle unexpected difficulties

  • A CAS project is a strong way to meet LO4 because it requires at least one month of sequential effort and collaboration

Evidence for the CAS portfolio

  • Evidence for LO4 must be gathered in your CAS portfolio—a collection of work that showcases your CAS journey

  • Reflections are the primary source of evidence used to determine if you have achieved this outcome

  • You should create reflections that describe your ongoing effort and how you resolved specific problems

  • Reflections can capture significant moments where you mastered a new skill or chose to continue after facing a challenge

  • Supervisor reports serve as formal evidence that you maintained regular attendance and dedication

  • Other valid evidence includes updated timelines, attendance logs and photos that document your progress over the 18-month programme
