Worked example of an "Explain one way" question
Worked Example
Explain one way in which the weapons used in warfare were different between the medieval period (c1250–c1500) and the modern period (c1900–present).
(4)
Answer:
One way in which weapons changed between the medieval and modern periods is in their speed and destruction (SOC). In the medieval period, soldiers mainly used swords, spears and longbows. The longbow was important at battles such as Agincourt, but it still relied on the skill of the archer and could only fire one arrow at a time (SOC). In contrast, in the First World War, armies used machine guns that could fire hundreds of bullets per minute and tanks that could move across no-man’s-land. These modern weapons caused mass casualties and changed how battles were fought (SOC).
