The topic of ‘shopping’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to speak or write about yourself, or understand information about others. Let’s use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them.

In the listening exam, there will be some multiple-choice questions where you need to select the correct ending for each sentence. This question will help you to practise this.

Here are the correct answers:

  1. A - un regalo para mi marido

  2. B - me gusta esta camiseta

  3. A - la quiero en azul

Shopping: speaking

In part 1 of the speaking exam, you will take part in a role-play. Your teacher will play the part of your friend, and you will ask and answer questions.

  • The role-play lasts between 1 and 1.5 minutes

  • You need to prepare answers to the prompts

  • You need to ask your teacher a question when you see the ? symbol

  • Each response must include a verb, but you don’t need to develop your sentences fully like you would in conversation tasks

This question will help you to respond to role-play prompts on the topic of shopping.

Worked Example

Prepare the following role-play.

  1. Say how often you go shopping. (Give one detail.)

  2. Give an opinion about shopping. (Give one detail.)

  3. Say what you have bought recently and why. (Give two details.)

  4. Say something you will buy in future. (Give one detail.)

  5. ? Ask your friend a question about shopping.

Answer:

Here are some example responses.

  2. Me gusta comprar ropa.

  3. Ayer compré un libro.

  4. Me gustaría comprar un regalo para mi madre.

  5. ¿Cuál es tu tienda favorita?

Shopping: reading

In the reading exam, you may be asked to identify the positive and negative aspects of a topic. This question will help you to practise identifying advantages and disadvantages.

Look for positive and negative language to identify advantages and disadvantages, e.g. opinions (I like, I don’t like), adjectives, and key words such as ventaja (advantage) and desventaja (disadvantage).

Worked Example

You read an article about shopping. Elena is describing her shopping habits.
Answer the questions in English.

A veces voy al centro comercial, pero prefiero comprar en línea. Las cosas son más baratas y es más fácil porque no tengo que visitar una tienda. Sin embargo, hay desventajas. Cuando compro ropa en línea, no me la puedo probar. ¡También hay que pagar para enviar los productos!

  1. According to Elena, what are two advantages of shopping online? [2 marks]

  2. According to Elena, what are two disadvantages of shopping online? [2 marks]

Answers:

Here are the correct answers:

  1. things are cheaper / less expensive [1], it’s easier (because you don't need to visit a shop) [1]

  2. you can’t try on clothes [1], you have to pay to post things / products / items [1]

Examiner Tips and Tricks

We can see from prefiero that the advantages are mentioned first, and the word desventajas (disadvantages) helps to identify the negative points.

Shopping: writing

In the writing paper, there will be one question where you need to write a 90-word response guided by bullet points. The same question will appear on both Foundation and Higher papers.

Worked Example

You are writing an article about shopping.
Write approximately 90 words in Spanish.
You must write something about each bullet point.
Mention:

  • Your opinion of shopping

  • Something you have bought recently

  • Something you want to buy in future

Answer:

Here is an example response of 87 words.

En mi opinión, ir de compras es muy divertido, pero a veces es demasiado caro. Me encanta comprar ropa, sin embargo, no me gusta ir al supermercado porque es muy aburrido.
El fin de semana pasado compré un pantalón negro para una fiesta y pienso que es muy bonito. El pantalón costó ochenta euros, ¡pero había un descuento y mis padres pagaron!
La semana que viene voy a ir al centro comercial para comprar un regalo para mi abuela, porque es su cumpleaños y quiere un libro.

In my opinion, shopping is very fun, but sometimes it is too expensive. I love buying clothes, however, I don’t like going to the supermarket because it is very boring.
Last weekend, I bought black trousers for a party, and I think they are very nice. The trousers cost eighty euros, but there was a discount and my parents paid!
Next week, I am going to go to the shopping centre to buy a present for my grandmother because it is her birthday, and she wants a book.
