Sport: vocabulary

The verbs jugar (to play) and hacer (to do, to make) are very important to talk about sports:

  • Use jugar for sports involving a ball, e.g. juego al fútbol (I play football)

  • Use hacer for all other sports and activities, e.g. hago ejercicio (I do exercise)

  • Hacer generally means ‘to make’ or ‘to do’

  • It can also mean ‘go’ when used with sports, e.g. hago la natación (I go swimming)

  • Jugar and hacer both have irregular forms in the present tense, so need learning carefully:

Examiner Tips and Tricks

It is important to learn key words for the exam, but you can also add your own personal vocabulary so you can express yourself better.

If you play a sport and might want to talk or write about it, look up the Spanish word and make a note of it - many are cognates, e.g. el tenis, el boxeo, el atletismo.

Say some sentences about your sport(s), making sure you use jugar or hacer correctly.
