To be able to talk about your future plans for studying, the near future tense is essential. Let’s look at it in more detail.

Near future

Dans le futur, je vais aller à l’université et je vais étudier les sciences. Je vais travailler dur pour réussir mes examens.

  • The near future tense is used to express ‘going to’ when talking about future plans

  • The sentence above uses the near future tense, and means 'In future I am going to go to university and I am going to study science. I am going to work hard to pass my exams'

  • Use the present tense form of the verb aller then add an infinitive

  • Add ne ... pas around the form of aller to make negative sentences

    • Nous n'allons pas étudier les maths

      We are not going to study maths

    • Ils ne vont pas réussir les examens

      They are not going to pass the exams

  • All three sounds are pronounced exactly the same
