Food and Drink: Exam Skills (AQA GCSE French): Revision Note

The topic of ‘food and drink’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to speak or write about yourself, or understand information about others. Let’s use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them.

Food and drink: listening

In the listening exam, you will complete a dictation task, where you write down exactly what you hear in French. This question will help you practise dictation.

Answers:

  1. Elle aime boire du lait frais.

  2. Nous avons cuisiné un repas végétarien.

  3. J’ai faim donc je vais manger du pain.

  4. Il est important de bien manger.

  • You should have identified the [ain], [aim] and [im] sounds

  • You should have included the correct accents in sentence 2

Food and drink: speaking

In part 3 of the speaking exam, you need to describe two photos and then have a conversation with your teacher about the theme covered in the photos. This question will help you to practise describing a photo on the topic of food and drink.

Worked Example

Answer the following questions in French.

  • Qu’est-ce que tu aimes manger ?

  • Qu’est-ce que tu aimes boire ?

  • Qu’est-ce que tu as mangé la semaine dernière ?

  • Je suis vegan donc je ne mange pas de viande, mais j’adore manger du pain ! 

  • Ma famille mange ensemble trois fois par semaine, et nous mangeons toujours des frites, mais ce n’est pas sain ! 

  • J’aime boire du thé mais il est important de boire beaucoup d’eau aussi. Je vais essayer de boire plus d’eau. 

  • La semaine dernière nous sommes allés au restaurant français près de chez moi et la nourriture était délicieuse. 

  • I am vegan so I don’t eat meat, but I love eating bread!

  • My family eats together three times a week, and we always eat chips, but it’s not healthy!

  • I like drinking tea but it’s important to drink lots of water too. I’m going to try to drink more water.

  • Last week we went to the French restaurant near my house and the food was delicious.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Develop your answers as much as possible, including different tenses, different subjects,  a range of connectives, and opinions with reasons. Look at the example responses above and identify these elements in each answer.

Food and drink: reading

In the reading exam you need to translate five French sentences into English. Each sentence is worth five marks. These questions will help you to practise translating into English. 

Worked Example

Translate these sentences into English.

  1. Aujourd’hui pour le petit-déjeuner, j’ai mangé du fromage. 

  2. Le café est ma boisson préférée.

  3. Elle a soif donc elle va boire de l’eau.

  4. J’aime cuisiner avec ma famille après le collège. 

  5. On va souvent au restaurant chinois car la nourriture est délicieuse. 

Answers:

  1. Today for / at breakfast I ate cheese.

  2. Coffee is my favourite drink.

  3. She is thirsty so she is going to drink (some) water.

  4. I like cooking with my family after school.

  5. We often go to the Chinese restaurant because the food is delicious.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Always pay attention to tenses when translating - question 1 uses the past tense and question 3 uses the near future tense.

Food and drink: writing

In the reading exam, you need to translate five English sentences into French. There are two marks per sentence. This question will help you to practise translating into French.

Here are some tips:

  • Translate meaning, but don't translate word-for-word

  • Check tenses carefully

  • Look out for false friends

  • Check if nouns are singular or plural

Worked Example

Translate these sentences into French.

  1. My brother is going to read the menu.

  2. I do not drink alcohol because I prefer tea.

  3. The cold drinks were healthy. 

  4. We always eat cake in the kitchen.

  5. My parents eat at seven o’clock every evening.

Answers:

  1. Mon frère va lire la carte.

    This sentence is in the future tense.

  2. Je ne bois pas d'alcool parce que je préfère le thé.

    To make a sentence negative, add ne … pas around the verb.

  3. Les boissons froides étaient saines.

    ‘Drinks’ is a feminine plural noun, so the adjectives must match.

  4. Nous mangeons toujours du gâteau dans la cuisine.

    You need to know how to conjugate the verb manger in all of its forms.

  5. Mes parents mangent à dix-neuf heures chaque soir.

    You need to know how to say times in French.
