Using a variety of structures in speaking and writing is a great way to gain more marks. Using the gerund is a useful way to do this - let's look at it in more detail.

Infinitives as nouns

  • The infinitive verb can be used as a noun in French

  • This corresponds to the -ing form in English

  • Use the infinitive at the start of the sentence:

    • Travailler ensemble, c’est essentiel pour faire une différence

      Working together is essential in order to make a difference

    • Donner de l’argent peuvent aider beaucoup de gens

      Giving money can help a lot of people

    • Participer à une manifestation montre que je m’inquiète

      Participating in a demonstration shows that I am worried
