Family celebrations: listening

In Paper 1, you must answer comprehension questions in English (Section A) at both tiers. Pay close attention to time phrases like the imperfect tense to secure marks.

Worked Example

Patricia is talking to a friend about an event she went to. Answer the questions in English.

00:00
  1. What kind of event was it?

  2. What time of year did it take place?

  3. What did the guests do that he enjoyed most?

  4. What did she think about the event?

[4 marks]

Answer:

  1. A wedding (la boda de mi hermana)

  2. Summer (en verano)

  3. The guests danced and sang (bailaban y cantaban)

  4. It was the best party of her life (Fue la mejor fiesta de mi vida)

Family celebrations: speaking

The Photo Card discussion (Part 3 of the Speaking exam) is a crucial area for demonstrating your range, especially across different tenses. On this Revision Note, you will see how to prepare for the Photo Card description.

Worked Example

Foundation Tier

  • Spend 5 minutes looking at the two photos. Make as many notes as you wish on a piece of paper and use these notes when practising your description out loud

  • Say at least one thing about each photo for one minute total

  • After you have spoken about the content of the photos, think of possible questions related to any of the topics within the theme of Popular Culture

An image which shows a family celebrating a birthday/anniversary with a cake in the middle. This needs to be a photo rather than an illustration.
Include an image similar to the one below, which shows a multitude of people celebrating a cultural festival in Spain (las fallas). This needs to be a photo rather than an illustration.

[5 marks]

Answer:

En la primera foto, veo una celebración privada. Hay un grupo de amigos y creo que es un cumpleaños. Están sentados alrededor de una mesa grande y parecen contentos. Llevan ropa informal. Hay una tarta y están comiendo.

En la segunda imagen, veo una fiesta pública en la calle. Hay mucha gente bailando y también hay un hombre tocando una guitarra. Creo que es un festival español, quizás Las Fallas. Parece muy divertido y me gusta el ambiente.

  • How to answer: To make sure you’re covering the photos clearly, cover these three essential structural elements:

    • What there is: Hay (there is/are) or Veo (I see)

    • What they are doing: Están + -ando/-iendo (Present Continuous)

    • How they feel: Parecen (they seem) + adjective (alegre/contento)

Worked Example

Higher Tier

  • Spend 5 minutes looking at the two photos. Make as many notes as you wish on a piece of paper and use these notes when practising your description out loud

  • Say at least one thing about each photo for at least one and a half minutes

  • After you have spoken about the content of the photos, think of possible complex questions related to any of the topics within the theme of Popular Culture

[5 marks]

Answer:

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • There is a mandatory prompt your teacher will use to start your description. Example: Háblame de las fotos (Tell me about the photos)

  • Remember that as Part 3 of the Speaking exam, there will be an unprepared conversation on the same topic, following your Photo Card description

Family celebrations: reading

In Reading Paper 3, you will be asked to identify time references (Past, Present, Future) based on a text. Look for those crucial time indicators and your knowledge of the imperfect tense!

Worked Example

Read this short blog post about a student's birthday.

When do these events happen according to the article?

Write:

P for something that happened in the past

N for something that is happening now

F for something that is going to happen in the future

Write the correct letter in each space provided.

  1. Having a quiet birthday _____

  2. Grandmother organising a big celebration  _____

  3. Parents saving money _____

  4. The student planning to travel _____

[4 marks]

Answer:

  1. N

  2. P

  3. N

  4. F

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Follow instructions meticulously: Answer ALL questions. If you’re not sure of the answer, guess! No answer is an automatic 0 marks, but you might have a chance if you guess

  • Ensure you write the correct letter (P, N, or F) in the provided box. If you want to cross out an answer, make sure it is obvious which one is the right one

  • See grammar tips on how to spot tenses

Family celebrations: writing

For the structured writing task in Section B (Approx. 90 words), you must address all three compulsory bullet points and cover all three time frames (past, present, future).

Worked Example

Write a short social media post about your favourite family celebrations.

Write approximately 90 words in Spanish

You must write something about each bullet point.

Mention:

  • Describe your favourite celebration when you were younger

  • Explain how you usually celebrate birthdays now

  • Say what plans you have for the next important family celebration

[15 marks]

Answer:

English translation: When I was a child, my favourite celebration was Christmas. We always used to spend Christmas Eve at my grandparents' house and we would eat turkey. The whole family used to get together and we used to sing carols. It was magical and very special.

Nowadays, we usually celebrate birthdays with a dinner in a restaurant or sometimes at home with lots of music and dancing.

My siblings and I are going to organise a big birthday party for my father next month. It is going to be very fun. We have planned a barbecue in the garden, and I am going to give him a expensive gift: tickets for a concert!

  • Make sure you respond to all three compulsory bullet points in the task

  • Successfully include references to all three time frames (Past, Present, and Future/Conditional)

  • Aim for regular attempts at complexity. This means linking sentences using advanced connectors (aunque, porque, cuando), and correctly integrating structures like direct and dndirect object pronouns e.g. le voy a dar

  • Always check your work, especially verb endings and tenses! Avoid major errors (errors that prevent the examiner from understanding the message)

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Know the stakes (Higher tier): The extended writing task (Question 3, approx. 150 words) accounts for 50% of the paper’s total marks, so plan your time accordingly
