To be able to talk about your future plans for studying, the near future tense is essential. Let’s look at it in more detail.

Near future

  • The near future tense is used to express ‘going to’ when talking about future plans

  • Use the present tense form of the verb ir with the preposition a, then add an infinitive

Spanish

English

  • infinitive

voy

a

I am going

estudiar

to study

vas

you are going (informal)

va

he / she is going

vamos

we are going

vais

you are going (plural or formal)

van

they are going

  • Add no in front of the form of ir to make negative sentences:

    • No vamos a estudiar las matemáticas

We are not going to study maths

    • No van a aprobar los exámenes

They are not going to pass the exams
