Future plans: work

When talking about your future work plans, you could mention:

  • what you want to work as and why

  • where you want to work

  • how you imagine the world of work

  • what is important to you in your job

You will also need to use the inflectional future tense correctly to talk about these plans.

Some useful words and phrases to talk about your future plans for work are:

  • Voy a ser … - I am going to be … 

  • Voy a trabajar como … - I am going to work as … 

  • Sueño con ser … - I dream of being … (you dream con - ‘with’ - in Spanish, not ‘of’)

  • Change masculine forms of jobs ending in -o to -a for the feminine form:

    • abogado - male lawyer

    • abogada - female lawyer

    • secretario - male secretary

    • secretaria - female secretary

  • Jobs ending in -or add -a in the feminine form:

    • pintor - male painter

    • pintora - female painter

    • escritor - male writer

    • escritora - female writer

  • Don’t use the indefinite article (a, an) when talking about jobs in Spanish:

    • Ella es periodista.

      She is a journalist.

    • Quiero ser artista.

      I want to be an artist. 

  • Use the verb ser with jobs in Spanish, not estar:

    • Soy soldado.

      I am a soldier.

    • ¿Eres ingeniera?

      Are you an engineer?

  • There are several Spanish nouns for ‘job’ or ‘work’ - make sure you recognise them as synonyms:

    • carerra (f)

    • empleo (m)

    • puesto (m)

    • trabajo (m)
