The topic of ‘future plans: work’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to speak or write about yourself, or understand information about others. Let’s use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them.

Future plans: work: listening

In the listening exam, there will be some multiple-choice questions where you need to select a certain number of correct answers from all of the options provided. This question will help you to practise this.

You listen to Amira and Hugo talking about their future plans. What is important to them?

Write the two correct letters for each person.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

When presented with multiple-choice options, it is useful to note down the vocabulary in Spanish before listening to help you to listen out for key words - these are indicated in bold in the answers above.

Future plans: work: speaking

In part 2 of the speaking exam, you will read aloud a text and answer four unprepared questions based on the topic of the text. Here are some sentences for you to practise reading aloud on the topic of future plans - work.

Worked Example

Read aloud these sentences in Spanish.

Mi hermano es cuidador y mi madre es pintora.
No me gustaría trabajar en una oficina.
En el futuro fundaré mi propia empresa.
Los empleados eran bastante simpáticos.
Hay mucho concurso en el mundo del trabajo.

Answer:

  • You should have remembered to stress syllables with accents

  • You should have pronounced [j] as a harsh, guttural sound

  • You should have remembered that the letter 'h' is silent in Spanish

Future plans: work: reading

It is important to be able to identify key information in the reading exam, but you don’t always need to understand every word. This question will help you to practise identifying key information.

You see some headlines in a Spanish newspaper. Which headline matches each topic?

    The headline means ‘How do you get a high salary?’

  2. Apprenticeships - A

    The headline means ‘attract more customers to your business’

  3. Work experience - B

    The headline means 'advice for successful job hunting’

Future plans: work: writing

In the writing exam, you need to translate five English sentences into Spanish. There are two marks per sentence. This question will help you to practise translating into Spanish.

Worked Example

Translate the following sentences into Spanish.

  1. I dream of becoming a singer.

  2. My sisters used to work in a factory.

  3. She will be a police officer.

  4. It is important to earn a lot of money.

  5. He works as a hairdresser in the city.

Answers:

  1. Sueño con ser cantante.

    Say 'dream with' in Spanish, not 'dream of'.

  2. Mis hermanas trabajaban en una fábrica.

    This sentence is in the imperfect (past) tense.

  3. Será policía.

    This sentence is in the inflectional future tense.

  4. Es importante ganar mucho dinero.

  5. Trabaja como peluquero en la ciudad.
