The topic of ‘life at school’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to speak or write about yourself, or understand information about others. Let’s use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them.

Write B if only statement B is correct.

life at school

Answer:

Here is an example answer.

En la foto hay unos alumnos y una profesora. Pienso que la profesora es simpática porque ayuda a los alumnos. Están en una clase moderna y hay un ordenador y unos libros. Los alumnos llevan uniforme, así que creo que la escuela puede estar en Inglaterra. En mi opinión, los alumnos son trabajadores y serios, y creo que encuentran esta asignatura interesante porque escriben mucho.

In the photo, there are some students and a teacher. I think the teacher is nice because she is helping the students. They are in a modern classroom, and there is a computer and some books. The students are wearing a uniform, so I think the school might be in England. In my opinion, the students are hardworking and serious, and I think they find this subject interesting because they are writing a lot.

Look out for time phrases to help you, e.g. ‘tomorrow’, ‘at the moment’, ‘yesterday’. You should also be able to identify tenses from the verb - look out for present tense verb endings, past participles, or a form of ir + a + infinitive to indicate the future.

Life at school: writing

In the Higher writing paper, there will be one question where you need to write a 150-word response guided by bullet points.

Worked Example

You are writing a post for your school website.
Write approximately 150 words in Spanish.
Describe:

  • the importance of working hard at school

  • how you will improve your grades in future

Answer:

Here is an example response of 147 words.

For me, it is very important to work hard at school. When I was younger, I didn’t put in much effort, and that’s why my grades weren’t good. Now I know that studying and doing homework is necessary to succeed in the future. My teachers say that to get good grades, I have to organise myself better and listen more in class, and I agree.
In the future, I am going to try to improve my grades. For example, I think that maths is difficult, so I am going to participate more in class and talk to my teacher if I have difficulties or if there is a problem. I am also going to go to the library to do my homework and study with my friends. At home, I don’t have much time and it is always very noisy. In my opinion, it is very important to pass exams in order to go to university and find an interesting job.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

When completing a 150-word writing task, you will need to be comfortable using a range of tenses, as the bullet points will cover two tenses.

This paragraph includes:

  • a range of tenses to match the bullet points - present, imperfect, and near future

  • different subjects - ‘I’, ‘they’, ‘it’

  • a range of conjunctions - por eso, así que, por ejemplo

  • different opinion phrases - en mi opinión, estoy de acuerdo, para mí

  • extended clauses using para

Tick off each bullet point as you cover it, and always check your work carefully once you have finished. Look at the response above to identify where each bullet point is covered.
