Entertainment: Exam Skills (AQA GCSE Spanish): Revision Note

The topic of ‘entertainment’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to speak or write about yourself, or understand information about others. Let’s use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them.
Entertainment: listening
In the listening exam, there are questions where you need to decide if the speaker’s opinion is positive, negative, or positive and negative. To get the correct answer, you need to listen out for adjectives and opinion phrases. This question will help you to practise this.
Worked Example
Four young people are talking about what they have read, watched or listened to recently. What is their opinion?
Write P for a positive opinion.
Write N for a negative opinion.
Write P&N for a positive and negative opinion.

Entertainment: speaking
In part 1 of the speaking exam, you will take part in a role-play. Your teacher will play the part of your friend, and you will ask and answer questions.
The role-play lasts between 1 and 1.5 minutes
You need to prepare answers to the prompts
You need to ask your teacher a question when you see the ? symbol
Each response must include a verb, but you don’t need to develop your sentences fully like you would in conversation tasks
This question will help you to respond to role-play prompts on the topic of entertainment.
Worked Example
Prepare the following role-play.
Say what you do in your free time. (Give one detail.)
Give your opinion of watching TV. (Give one detail.)
Say something about going to the cinema. (Give one detail.)
Give an advantage of reading. (Give one detail.)

Entertainment: reading
In the reading exam, you need to translate five Spanish sentences into English. There are two marks per sentence. This question will help you to practise translating into English.
Here are some tips:
Translate meaning, but don't translate word-for-word
Check tenses carefully
Look out for false friends
Check if nouns are singular or plural

Translate these sentences into English.
Prefiero leer un periódico cada día.
Ella escribió una letra sobre el amor.
Vamos a ir a un concierto este fin de semana.
Es una película que me da miedo.
Ayer escuché una canción nueva.

I prefer to read a newspaper every day.
She wrote lyrics about love.
We are going to go to a concert this weekend.
It's a film which scares me.

Examiner Tips and Tricks
In question 2, the Spanish noun letra is singular, but we use a plural noun (lyrics) and verb in English. Question 4 uses a relative clause with que, and the idiomatic expression dar miedo which literally means 'to give fear', but cannot be translated word-for-word.
Entertainment: writing
In the writing exam, you need to translate five English sentences into Spanish. This question will help you to practise this.
Worked Example
Translate the following sentences into Spanish.
I like classical music because it is calm.
His books are always a bit sad.
The stories were funny but too short.
I am going to buy a famous novel.
My sisters watch some interesting series.
