Many of the key verbs used to talk about hobbies are irregular. Let's look at some of them in more detail.

High-frequency irregular verbs

  • Most Spanish verbs are regular, which means they follow a pattern, e.g. hablar

  • Irregular verbs don’t follow a pattern so they need to be learned separately

  • Some key irregular verbs you need to talk about hobbies are:

    • ir (to go)

    • ser (to be)

    • tener (to have)

  • Here are their present tense forms:

Examples

Vamos a la piscina.

  • Some verbs are only irregular in the 'I' form of the present tense.

  • Remember that you can add no before any verb to say that you don’t do something:

    • No voy a la piscina.

      I don’t go to the swimming pool.

    • No leemos periódicos.

      We don’t read newspapers.
