Hobbies: Grammar and Phonics (AQA GCSE Spanish): Revision Note
Exam code: 8692
Many of the key verbs used to talk about hobbies are irregular. Let's look at some of them in more detail.
High-frequency irregular verbs
Most Spanish verbs are regular, which means they follow a pattern, e.g. hablar
Irregular verbs don’t follow a pattern so they need to be learned separately
Some key irregular verbs you need to talk about hobbies are:
ir (to go)
ser (to be)
tener (to have)
Here are their present tense forms:
ir | ser | tener | |
I | voy | soy | tengo |
you (informal) | vas | eres | tienes |
he / she | va | es | tiene |
we | vamos | somos | tenemos |
you (informal plural) | vais | sois | tenéis |
they | van | son | tienen |
Examples | Vamos a la piscina. | Es miembro de un club de música. | Tienen un blog interesante. |
We go to the swimming pool. | He / she is a member of a music club. | They have an interesting blog. |
Some verbs are only irregular in the 'I' form of the present tense.
infinitive | ‘I’ form | Examples | |
dar | doy | Doy un paseo con mi perro. | I go for a walk with my dog. |
hacer | hago | Hago mucho deporte. | I do a lot of sport. |
salir | salgo | Salgo con mis amigos. | I go out with my friends. |
ver | veo | Veo la television. | I watch TV. |
Remember that you can add no before any verb to say that you don’t do something:
No voy a la piscina.
I don’t go to the swimming pool.
No leemos periódicos.
We don’t read newspapers.
