To be able to talk about sports, you need to use a group of opinion verbs which follow a certain pattern. Let's look at this in more detail.

Interesar-type verbs

  • In English, we say ‘I like basketball’, but in Spanish we say ‘basketball pleases me’

  • There are a group of verbs in Spanish which follow this structure

  • They are often used to give opinions

  • The verbs match the thing that is liked, not the person who likes it

  • They end in -a when followed by singular nouns and -an when followed by plural nouns

  • To say who likes something, use an indirect object pronoun before the verb

I like the players.

interesar

Te interesa el fútbol.

You are interested in football.

encantar

He / she loves the tournaments.

  • We can also use these verbs with infinitives:

    • te gusta correr

      you like running

    • le interesa bailar

      he / she is interested in dancing

    • me encanta nadar

      I love swimming
