Sport: Grammar and Phonics (AQA GCSE Spanish): Revision Note
Exam code: 8692
To be able to talk about sports, you need to use a group of opinion verbs which follow a certain pattern. Let's look at this in more detail.
Interesar-type verbs
In English, we say ‘I like basketball’, but in Spanish we say ‘basketball pleases me’
There are a group of verbs in Spanish which follow this structure
They are often used to give opinions
The verbs match the thing that is liked, not the person who likes it
They end in -a when followed by singular nouns and -an when followed by plural nouns
To say who likes something, use an indirect object pronoun before the verb
infinitive | singular nouns | plural nouns | Examples | |
gustar | me / te / le gusta | me / te / le gustan | Me gustan los jugadores. | I like the players. |
interesar | me / te / le interesa | me / te / le interesan | Te interesa el fútbol. | You are interested in football. |
encantar | me / te / le encanta | me / te / le encantan | Le encantan los torneos. | He / she loves the tournaments. |
We can also use these verbs with infinitives:
te gusta correr
you like running
le interesa bailar
he / she is interested in dancing
me encanta nadar
I love swimming
