At the doctor's: writing

Foundation tier

In the Foundation writing exam you need to complete a gap-fill task which is based on your knowledge of grammar, such as verb forms or adjective agreements.

Worked Example

Choose the correct word from the three options.

  • La enfermera dice que hay que …………………… al hospital.

voy

ve

ir

The correct answer is ir. The sentence means ‘the nurse says you must go to hospital’.

We need to use an infinitive verb after hay que. Voy is the present tense 'I' form and ve is the imperative.

  • Me siento mal. Me duelen …………………… dientes.

el

las

los

The correct answer is los. The sentence means ‘I feel bad. My teeth hurt’.

Dientes is a masculine plural noun - it ends in -s and the verb duelen is plural. El is used for masculine singular nouns and las is used for feminine plural nouns.

  • ¡Eva, …………………… más agua!

beber

bebí

bebe

The correct answer is bebe. The sentence means ‘Eva, drink more water!’.

This sentence uses the imperative. Beber is the infinitive form and bebí is the preterite (past) 'I' form.
