  • Me gusta beber café, pero también es importante beber mucha agua.

  • La semana pasada fuimos a un restaurante español en mi barrio y la comida estaba deliciosa.

  • I am vegan, so I don’t eat meat, but I love eating bread. My family and I always eat chips, even though it’s not healthy.

  • I like drinking coffee, but it is also important to drink plenty of water.

  • Last week, we went to a Spanish restaurant in my neighbourhood, and the food was delicious.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Develop your answers as much as possible, including different tenses, different subjects,  a range of connectives, and opinions with reasons. Look at the example responses above and identify these elements in each answer.

Food and drink: reading

In the reading exam you need to translate five Spanish sentences into English. Each sentence is worth five marks. These questions will help you to practise translating into English.

Worked Example

Translate these sentences into English.

  1. Hoy para el desayuno comí una manzana.

  2. El café es mi bebida favorita.

  3. Ella tiene sed, así que va a beber agua.

  4. Me gusta cenar con mi familia después del colegio.

  5. Siempre vamos al restaurante chino porque la comida está rica.

Answers:

  1. Today for / at breakfast I ate an apple.

  2. Coffee is my favourite drink.

  3. She is thirsty so she is going to drink (some) water.

  4. I like eating dinner with my family after school.

  5. We always go to the Chinese restaurant because the food is tasty.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Rico can mean 'rich', 'wealthy' or 'tasty', but 'tasty' works best to describe food. Context is important when using words that have more than one meaning.

Food and drink: writing

In the writing exam, you need to translate five English sentences into Spanish. This question will help you to practise translating into Spanish.

Here are some tips:

  • Translate meaning, but don't translate word-for-word

  • Check tenses carefully

  • Look out for false friends

  • Check if nouns are singular or plural

Worked Example

Translate these sentences into Spanish.

  1. My brother is going to read the menu.

  2. We are not hungry.

  3. The cold drinks were delicious.

  4. There is too much fat in chips.

  5. My parents eat at nine o’clock in the kitchen.

Answers:

  1. Mi hermano va a leer la carta.

This sentence is in the future tense.

  2. No tenemos hambre.

To make a sentence negative, we add no before

the verb. Remember that we say ‘to have hunger’ in Spanish, so we can’t translate word-for-word.

  3. Las bebidas frías estaban deliciosas.

‘Drinks’ is a feminine plural noun, so the adjectives must match.

  4. Hay demasiada grasa en las patatas fritas.

When used as an adjective, demasiado must agree in gender and number with the noun it describes.

  5. Mis padres comen a las nueve en la cocina.

You need to know how to say times in Spanish.
