B. Cloudy / Overcast
C. Rainy
D. Windy
E. Snowy
[4 marks]
Answer:
C (llueve mucho)
A (hace sol)
B (cielo está completamente gris)
D (hace mucho viento)
Audio transcript:
¡Qué pena! No podemos jugar al fútbol porque llueve mucho. (What a shame! We can’t play football because it is raining a lot.)
Me gusta mi ciudad porque casi siempre hace sol. (I like my city because it is almost always sunny.)
Es imposible estar fuera. El cielo está completamente gris hoy. (It is impossible to be outside. The sky is completely grey today.)
Necesito una chaqueta porque hace mucho viento aquí. (I need a jacket because it is very windy here.)
Examiner Tips and Tricks
To secure the answer, focus on the impersonal verb being used (llueve or hace) or descriptive adjectives. Even if you miss the direct weather word, context clues like no podemos jugar al fútbol (we can't play football) can help you guess the correct answer.
Exam skills: speaking
Here you'll find a role-play (Part 1 - Foundation Tier), which requires conveying basic, unambiguous information using the present and past tenses in the context of weather conditions, and the unprepared conversation section (Part 3 - Higher Tier), requiring developed, hypothetical, and future-focused responses using complex grammar.
Worked Example
Foundation Tier
Prepare a conversation with a Spanish friend about moving houses and answer these questions. In order to score full marks, you must include a verb in your response to each task.

Say when is the best time for travelling. (Give one opinion.)
Say what you prefer to do when it rains. (Give one detail.)
Say what the weather was like yesterday. (Give one detail.)

Answer:
Según las noticias, hará mucho sol y la temperatura máxima será de treinta grados. Pienso que será un verano muy seco. (According to the news, it will be very sunny and the maximum temperature will be thirty degrees. I think it will be a very dry summer.)
Uses the simple future tense (hará, será) for prediction
Si hace frío, me quedaré dentro del hotel. Me gustaría leer una novela en vez de ir a la playa, porque el clima es demasiado húmedo. (If it is cold, I will stay inside the hotel. I would like to read a novel instead of going to the beach, because the climate is too humid.)
Uses the conditional (me gustaría)
Para mí, la mejor estación es la primavera porque el clima es fresco y agradable. Además, el cielo no está tan nublado como en invierno. (For me, the best season is spring because the climate is cool and pleasant. Furthermore, the sky is not as cloudy as in winter.)
Uses comparative structure (tan...como) and the connective además. Uses the adjective fresco
Se puede jugar al fútbol en el parque y también se puede dar un paseo cerca del río. Me gusta ir al campo en bicicleta. (One can play football in the park and one can also go for a walk near the river. I like going to the countryside by bike.)
Uses the impersonal reflexive Se puede followed by the infinitive. Uses the multi-word phrase al aire libre (outdoors) and dar un paseo
Note that your marks for the unexpected conversation will be together with the Photo Card description.
Exam skills: reading
At Foundation Tier you will find an activity that models a matching task, testing the ability to retrieve details and opinions about seasons/weather from a short text, as well as an activity that models the Higher Tier task of identifying tense/time frame (P, N, F) based on verb structures and time adverbs.
Worked Example
Foundation Tier
Read the comments from three students about their favourite season. Match each statement (1-3) to the correct speaker (A-C).
A. Elena: Me encanta el invierno porque hace frío y puedo quedarme en casa. Siempre veo muchas películas con mi familia.
B. Luis: Mi estación favorita es el verano ya que hace calor y puedo ir a la playa. El cielo está siempre azul y soleado.
C. Javier: No me gusta la primavera porque llueve mucho. Para mí, es imposible hacer deporte cuando llueve.
Who:
Likes the weather because it allows him/her to do outdoor activities:
Finds the conditions unsuitable for playing sport:
Enjoys staying indoors during their favourite season:
[3 marks]
Answer:
B (Luis, puedo ir a la playa)
C (Javier, es imposible hacer deporte)
A (Elena, puedo quedarme en casa)
Exam tip: The answer is often found immediately following the connective (porque or ya que). Use negative markers (No me gusta, imposible) to quickly locate negative opinions or disadvantages.
Worked Example
Higher Tier
Read the short text about travel and weather. Match each statement (1-4) to the time frame it refers to
Write
P for something that happened in the past
N for something that happens in the present
F for something that will happen in the future
El verano pasado, viajé a un país donde hacía demasiado viento . Solía pensar que el viento era divertido. Actualmente, estoy ahorrando para ir a la costa norte de Chile. Pienso que allí hará más calor que en mi ciudad. Si el clima fuera peor, elegiría otro destino.
Travelling to a windy place
Saving money
Planning to visit South America
Considering wind enjoyable
[4 marks]
Answer:
P (Past, indicated by El verano pasado and the Preterite viajé)
N (Now, indicated by the Present Continuous estoy ahorrando)
F (Future, indicated by para ir and prediction hará más calor)
P (Past, indicated by the Imperfect Solía pensar and era)
Examiner Tips and Tricks
Differentiate between the present continuous (estoy ahorrando = N) and simple future tense (hará = F). Also, note the importance of the imperfect tense (Solía pensar), which signifies habitual actions or states in the past (P).
Exam skills: writing
Here you will see a Foundation Tier activity that models the grammar gap fill task (Paper 4, Question 3), which specifically tests grammar application and word choice. At Higher Tier, you have an activity that models the challenging English to Spanish translation task (Paper 4, Question 1), requiring a minimum of 50 words and testing the accurate application of complex grammatical structures.
