Budgets

What is a budget?

  • A budget is a way to plan all incomings (money coming in) and outgoings (money going out, i.e. money spent)

  • You can use a budget to work out how much you take home each week or month after paying bills

  • You can use a budget to work out how long it will take you to save up a certain amount of money

How can I use a budget to balance incomings and outgoings?

  • You add up all the money you receive

    • This could come from:

      • Your net pay

      • Bonuses

      • Benefits

  • You add up all the money you need to pay out

    • This could pay for:

      • Bills/expenses

      • Entertainment

      • Food

  • Subtract the total amount you pay out from the amount you receive

  • The difference is the amount you have left over

    • This could be used for savings

How can I find out how long it takes to save a certain amount of money?

  • You might be asked to find out how long it takes someone to save money to buy an item

  • Divide the required amount by the amount saved each week or month

  • Round up to the next whole number if you get a decimal

Examiner Tips and Tricks

You might have to work with a budget for a person or for an event. The skills are the same.

Worked Example

Tia's monthly net pay is £2400.

Each month, Tia has the following expenses:

Rent

£800

Travel

£300

Gas and electricity

£115

Food

£245

(a) Calculate how much Tia has left each month after paying her expenses.

(b) Tia saves 5% of her net pay each month. How many months will it take Tia to save enough to buy a TV console worth £450?

Answer:

(a)

Add together the expenses

£ 800 plus £ 300 plus £ 115 plus £ 245 equals £ 1460

Subtract this from her net pay

£ 2400 minus £ 1460 equals £ 940

£940

(b)

Calculate 5% of Tia's net pay

  • Find 10%

£ 2400 divided by 10 equals £ 240

  • Halve this

£ 240 divided by 2 equals £ 120

See how many times £120 goes into £450

£ 450 divided by £ 120 equals 3 space remainder space £ 90

Round up to the next whole number

4 months
