Religion & its Scope (DP IB Theory of Knowledge): Revision Note
Religion & its scope
Religions are complex systems of beliefs, practices, assumptions and values
Religion often addresses questions about meaning, purpose, and how to live
For many people, religion shapes how they understand the world and can act as a backdrop that influences their understanding of other areas of knowledge
Religion influences how billions of people think and what they count as truth
Note that ToK discussion should stay focused on knowledge, rather than becoming a general debate about religion
Religion as a knowledge system
A knowledge system is a shared way of producing, storing and passing on knowledge within a community
Religion can be treated as a knowledge system because communities develop shared sources, shared interpretations, and shared practices that all shape religious knowledge
Producing religious knowledge
Religious knowledge is produced when a community develops shared interpretations of its sources
Interpreting scripture can generate new or refined teachings by linking passages to new questions and situations
Religious teachers and community discussion can shape which interpretations become accepted
Religious experiences can be treated as meaningful when they are interpreted using existing teachings and concepts
Storing religious knowledge
Religious knowledge is stored in forms that preserve teachings so they can be taught repeatedly over time
Scriptures store teachings in written form, acting as a reference point for later interpretation
Traditions store knowledge through shared ways of life
Ritual patterns store meaning through shared actions and symbols
Passing on religious knowledge
Religious knowledge is passed on through repeated teaching and modelling, so new members learn what to believe and how to act
Communal reading and teaching pass on how scriptures are understood, not just what they say
Family and community life pass on traditions by modelling practices and explaining their significance
Ritual participation allows community members to learn by doing and links actions to shared meanings
