What is Sikhism?

  • Sikhism is a monotheistic religion

  • It was founded in the 15th century, with roots in the Punjab region of India

  • Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak around 500 years ago

  • Sikhism is still based on Guru Nanak’s teachings and those of the nine Sikh Gurus who followed him

  • There are approximately 25–30 million Sikhs worldwide, and around 80–90% live in India

    • In the UK, there are over 525,000 Sikhs

Key beliefs in Sikhism

  • Although there are different beliefs within Sikhism, there are key beliefs that unite all Sikhs

    • All Sikhs believe in the oneness of God (referred to as Waheguru)

    • The importance of truthful living

    • Equality of all individuals

    • Sikhs believe in reincarnation and strive to live a life that honours God through doing honest work, sharing with others, and remembering God in all actions

Key practices in Sikhism

  • There are also key practices that are shared by all Sikhs 

    • The Guru Granth Sahib is central to their faith and practice

    • The gurdwara plays a vital role in the community

    • The practice of Kirtan, or singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, is common

    • Sikhs provide a Langar, a free community kitchen in the gurdwara where everyone is welcome to share a meal, regardless of background and beliefs

    • All Sikhs believe in Seva, meaning selfless service to others, which is an important aspect of Sikh practice

    • An important ceremony is called the Amrit Sanskar, where Sikhs are initiated into the Khalsa

    • All Sikhs follow the Five Ks, which are the five visible symbols of the Khalsa 

      • Kesh - uncut hair

      • Kanga - a comb

      • Kara - a steel bracelet

      • Kirpan - a sword

      • Kachera - special undergarment
