What is Sikhism?
Sikhism is a monotheistic religion
It was founded in the 15th century, with roots in the Punjab region of India

Key beliefs in Sikhism
Although there are different beliefs within Sikhism, there are key beliefs that unite all Sikhs
All Sikhs believe in the oneness of God (referred to as Waheguru)
The importance of truthful living
Equality of all individuals
Sikhs believe in reincarnation and strive to live a life that honours God through doing honest work, sharing with others, and remembering God in all actions
Key practices in Sikhism
There are also key practices that are shared by all Sikhs
The Guru Granth Sahib is central to their faith and practice
The gurdwara plays a vital role in the community
The practice of Kirtan, or singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, is common
Sikhs provide a Langar, a free community kitchen in the gurdwara where everyone is welcome to share a meal, regardless of background and beliefs
All Sikhs believe in Seva, meaning selfless service to others, which is an important aspect of Sikh practice
An important ceremony is called the Amrit Sanskar, where Sikhs are initiated into the Khalsa
All Sikhs follow the Five Ks, which are the five visible symbols of the Khalsa
Kesh - uncut hair
Kanga - a comb
Kara - a steel bracelet
Kirpan - a sword
Kachera - special undergarment
