How do I answer a CIE IGCSE Business 2-mark question?

Define questions

  • In these questions you are asked to give a precise meaning of a key business term

  • Your definition should include two elements to attract both marks

Example

Define ‘Return on Capital Employed’.

Text defines return on capital employed, highlighting "profit generated" and "as a percentage of capital invested" with ticks, stating two correct elements.

Calculate questions

  • In these questions, you are asked to carry out a simple calculation using the given data

  • You should always show your workings

    • If your final answer is incorrect but some of your working is correct, you could gain one mark

  • Make sure you include relevant units e.g. £ or $, number of items, %, etc

  • You can use a calculator

Example

Kemala makes high-quality beauty products. Demand for her best-selling hand cream is price inelastic. She advertises her products in specialist beauty magazines. Kemala is analysing her income statement. An extract is shown in the table below.

Extract from Kemala’s income statement 2021 ($000)

Revenue

480

Gross profit

192

Profit for the year

72

Calculate Kemala's gross profit margin in 2021. Show your workings.

Calculation showing division and percentage with correct answer, verified by green ticks. Notes confirm full working and correctness, awarding both marks.

State or Identify questions

  • In these questions you need to either

    • Name, select or recognise two distinct points

    • Express, in clear terms, two distinct points
