The 2026 Business Management Paper 1 pre-released statement

  • This year's pre-released statement, issued in February 2025, introduces you to Abraca (ABC), a publicly-held concrete producer in Country Z

  • You are advised to spend a maximum of five hours researching the issues presented and learning terminology

The case study

  • The pre-release statement provides the first four paragraphs of the case study

    • The full case study will be provided on the day of the examination

  • Some key points include:

    • Innovation and R&D (intrapreneurship)

      • ABC’s scientists accidentally discovering a new process to extract gold from e-waste highlights innovation within an existing large firm

      • This links to research and development and intrapreneurship, where new ideas emerge from employees rather than start-ups

    • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability

      • The shift from burning e-waste (carbon-intensive) to a room-temperature process, and the reduction of landfill waste

      • This strongly suggests environmental responsibility, ethical objectives, and sustainability as part of business decision-making

    • Operations management and efficiency

      • References to increasing efficiencies in concrete production and running an e-waste processing factory

      • These point to operations efficiency, productivity, and possibly cost reduction through improved processes or technology

    • Growth strategies and diversification

      • Moving into e-waste processing and selling recovered gold represents diversification, particularly related diversification

      • ABC is expanding into a new but connected activity rather than relying only on concrete production

    • Market orientation and changing business objectives

      • ABC’s intention to become more market-orientated

      • This suggests a shift from focusing purely on production to responding more closely to market demand, customer needs, and new revenue streams (e.g., selling gold to jewellery makers)

Additional terminology

  • The pre-release statement also includes a list of additional terminology not in the Business management subject guide

  • You should familiarise yourself with this terminology before the examination

    • aggregates (as construction materials)

    • business-to-business (B2B)

    • carbon-intensive

    • circuit boards

    • clay

    • concrete

    • e-waste

    • landfill

    • limestone

    • plastic-shredding machinery

    • recycling

    • solar panels

    • toxic metals

  • Definitions and context for each of these terms, as well as the subject-specific terminology found within the early paragraphs of the case study, are provided here
