Overview of My Name is Leon
My Name is Leon is a novel that follows nine-year-old Leon as he struggles to adapt to life as he enters the care system. The book looks at how the care system affects children who are thrown into it by tumultuous home lives, and examines how Leon attempts to find himself and his place in a world that seems to reject him.
Set in 1980s Birmingham, the narrative gives the reader a look into the racial and social politics of the time, as members of Leon’s local community are targeted by the police.
Leon and his new baby brother, Jake, are taken away from their mum, Carol, after she has a mental breakdown and can no longer care for them. They are taken in by foster carer Maureen, who brings not only a warmth that Leon has lacked, but a comfort of living with full plates of food, regular treats, and new toys — all things that his birth mother could never afford.
Jake is quickly adopted, but Leon is left behind. After the boys are split up, the quiet and thoughtful Leon is left lost, adrift from all his family and struggling to find comfort.
When Maureen falls ill, Leon is forced to move again, and Maureen’s sister Sylvia takes him in. A new bike and some new role models at the local allotments bring Leon hope, only for the ever-anxious young boy to plan an escape, collecting items he thinks he will need to plot a route to Jake, Carol, and the reuniting of the family unit that Leon still holds dear.
