A psychologist investigated whether motion parallax provides enough information for accurate perception of distance.

Participants watched short video clips showing the view from the cockpit of an aircraft during landing. In some clips, the plane appeared to be moving towards the runway, with nearby objects moving quickly across the visual field and distant objects moving more slowly.

In other clips, the view of the runway was static, with no movement.

After each clip, participants estimated how close the plane was to the runway.

The psychologist recorded the number of accurate distance judgements made by participants.
