What is examined in the Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1?

  • It focuses on the fundamental principles and concepts of computer systems

  • The content assessed in Paper 1 includes topics 1 through 6 of the subject content:

    • Topic 1: Data Representation

    • Topic 2: Data Transmission

    • Topic 3: Hardware

    • Topic 4: Software

    • Topic 5: The Internet and its Uses

    • Topic 6: Automated and Emerging Technologies

  • The paper's duration is 1 hour and 45 minutes

  • The total number of marks available is 75

  • Paper 1 represents 50% of the total IGCSE qualification

Assessment structure and questions:

  • This is a written paper

  • It consists of short-answer and structured questions

  • All questions are compulsory, and candidates must answer directly on the question paper

  • The paper assesses assessment objectives (AO) AO1, AO2, and AO3

    • AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of principles and concepts

    • AO3: Provide solutions by evaluating, making judgments, and presenting conclusions

  • Calculators are not permitted in this examination

  • The paper assesses the full grade range from A* to G

  • Each individual question is set within separate contexts of ICT applications in everyday life

Key considerations for students:

  • Candidates should be able to apply mathematical skills, including arithmetic, Boolean operators, different number systems (binary, denary, hexadecimal), and methods of counting, totalling, and rounding

  • Command words (e.g., Calculate, Compare, Define, Describe, Explain, Identify, State) will be used consistently to indicate expectations

  • No prior study is expected for this course
