  • The topic of 'Being Famous' can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to identify information about celebrities, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of fame, or understand what others think about famous people

  • Let's use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them

Being famous: listening

  • In the listening exam, you will need to identify key details from longer spoken passages

  • This task will help you practise selecting the correct information from what you hear

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Anna is talking about two of her favourite celebrities. Which aspects of fame are mentioned? Write the four correct letters.

Being Famous listening exam

/
00:00

A

earning a lot of money

B

lack of freedom

C

winning an award

D

appearing on television

E

performing live on stage

F

being active on social media

Answers:

  • A - sie verdient sehr viel Geld

  • B - sie hat keine Freiheit

  • D - spielt oft im Fernsehen

  • F - sehr aktiv auf sozialen Medien

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Read the options carefully before you listen - this helps you know what to listen out for

  • Not every option will be mentioned

  • Be careful with distractors - viele Fans is mentioned but this does not mean an award has been won

  • Focus on what is explicitly said

Higher tier

Worked Example

Lukas is talking about his favourite celebrity. Which aspects of fame are mentioned? Write the four correct letters.

Lukas

00:00

A

difficulty of maintaining a private life

B

C

criticism from the press

D

appearing in a TV series

E

pride in achievements

F

influence on younger generations

Answers:

  • A - die Zeitung berichtet immer über sein Leben … Er hat kaum Zeit für sich selbst

  • C - die Kritik der Medien macht ihm das Leben sehr schwierig

  • E - Er ist stolz auf seinen Erfolg und hat wirklich viel geleistet

  • F - sein Einfluss auf die nächste Generation junger Menschen

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • At Higher tier, not every sentence is relevant to the questions - some information is there to distract you or add context

  • In this extract, the mention of Werbung (advertising) and Fußballspieler (football player) are not linked to any of the answer options

  • Focus on the options you have been given and listen specifically for language connected to each one

  • Negatives like kein and kaum are important - er ist kein Fußballspieler tells you something is not the case

Being famous: speaking

  • In part 3 of the speaking exam, you will be given a photo card with two photos

  • You will have 15 minutes to prepare and make notes before your speaking test

  • Your teacher will ask you to talk about the photos and then lead an unprepared conversation within the theme of Popular culture

  • Look carefully at both photos during preparation time and make notes if you wish

  • Your teacher will ask you to talk about the photos - say at least one thing about each photo

  • The conversation that follows is completely unprepared and can cover any topic within the theme of Popular culture - not just 'Being famous'

  • At Foundation tier, Part 3 lasts between four and five minutes in total; at Higher tier between six and seven minutes in total

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Your teacher will always begin with this question:
Sag mir etwas über die Fotos.

Photo 1 — Role model scene:

A warm, realistic illustration showing an adult (approximately 35–40 years old, casually dressed) sitting beside a child or young person (approximately 10–14 years old) at a table or desk

The adult is pointing at something — a book, paper, or screen — appearing to explain, guide or mentor

Both figures look engaged and positive; the adult's expression is calm, patient and encouraging

Setting: home or informal learning environment — natural light, simple background

Overall tone: warm, supportive, mentoring — conveying a positive role model relationship

No text, brand names or identifiable locations visible

Both figures should have neutral, non-specific ethnicities
Photo 2 — Celebrity/being famous scene:

A realistic illustration showing a performer or public figure (approximately 20–30 years old) on a stage or at a public event — for example a singer performing, an actor on a red carpet, or an athlete celebrating

Cameras or photographers visible in the background to convey the public nature of fame

The celebrity figure looks confident and successful

Setting: a stage, event venue or public appearance — bright lights, crowd in background

Overall tone: glamorous but also slightly overwhelming — should prompt discussion of both advantages and disadvantages of fame

No real celebrity likenesses, brand names or logos

Example photo description:

Auf dem ersten Foto sehe ich eine Frau und ein Kind. Die Frau sieht freundlich und geduldig aus - sie hilft dem Kind. Auf dem zweiten Foto sehe ich einen Mann, vielleicht ein Schauspieler. Es gibt viele Kameras.

In the first photo I can see a woman and a child. The woman looks kind and patient - she is helping the child. In the second photo I can see a man, maybe an actor. There are many cameras.

Example conversation questions and answers:

Welche Person auf dem Foto ist deiner Meinung nach ein gutes Vorbild?
Ich denke, die Frau auf dem ersten Foto ist ein gutes Vorbild, weil sie hilfsbereit und geduldig ist.
I think the woman in the first photo is a good role model because she is helpful and patient.

Was machst du in deiner Freizeit?
Ich höre gern Musik und gehe manchmal ins Konzert mit meinen Freunden.
I like listening to music and sometimes go to concerts with my friends.

Möchtest du berühmt sein? Warum?
Nein, ich möchte nicht berühmt sein, weil das Leben von einem Star sehr schwierig ist.
No, I would not like to be famous, because the life of a celebrity is very difficult.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • When describing the photos, say at least one thing about each - don't spend all your time on one photo

  • For the conversation, be ready to talk about any topic within 'Popular culture', not just 'Being famous'

  • The examiner might ask about your free time, festivals, or celebrities - so think broadly during your preparation time

In the first photo I can see a woman who is helping a child. The woman appears very responsible and patient - she is a good role model for the child. I find this photo very positive because it shows how important it is to help others. In the second photo I can see a man in a black jacket and black trousers. He looks successful and popular, but there are many cameras - the public life of a celebrity does not look easy.

Example conversation questions and answers:

Was sind die größten Nachteile, wenn man berühmt ist?
Meiner Meinung nach ist die Kritik der Medien ein großes Problem. Berühmte Menschen haben kaum Zeit für sich selbst und ihr Leben ist weder privat noch einfach.
In my opinion the criticism from the media is a big problem. Famous people have hardly any time for themselves and their life is neither private nor easy.

Welche Traditionen sind in deiner Familie besonders wichtig?
Weihnachten ist bei uns sehr wichtig. Wir feiern immer zusammen und die Tradition der Familie ist sehr wichtig für uns.
Christmas is very important for us. We always celebrate together and family tradition is very important for us.

Kann eine berühmte Person ein gutes Vorbild sein? Warum
Ja, aber nur wenn sie sich verantwortlich verhält. Viele Stars sind erfolgreich, aber nicht alle sind ehrlich oder großzügig - das ist wichtig für ein Vorbild.
Yes, but only if they behave responsibly. Many stars are successful, but not all of them are honest or generous - that is important for a role model.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • The conversation will range across the whole Popular culture theme - be prepared to talk about your free time, festivals and traditions, as well as fame and role models

  • Use structures like Meiner Meinung nach …, zwar … aber … and weder … noch to show sophistication

  • The examiner rewards variety of vocabulary and structures across the full conversation, not just one topic

Being famous: reading

  • In the reading paper, you will need to understand written German and respond to a variety of question types

  • This task practises two different skills - matching headlines to topics, which helps you identify key information quickly without needing to understand every word, and reading a longer text in detail to answer comprehension questions in English

Foundation tier

Worked Example

You see some German headlines about celebrities. Which headline matches each topic? Write the correct letter.

A

Dieser Sänger verdient Millionen mit seiner Musik

B

Warum hat dieser Schauspieler keine Freiheit mehr?

C

Bekannter Sänger gewinnt wichtigen Preis

D

Star kauft neues Haus in Berlin

E

Sängerin spricht über ihre neue Sendung im Fernsehen

  1. Earning money

  2. Lack of freedom

  3. Winning an award

Answers:

  1. A - verdient Millionen - earns millions

  2. B - keine Freiheit mehr - no freedom any more

  3. C - gewinnt wichtigen Preis - wins an important prize

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • You do not need to understand every word - focus on the key nouns and verbs

  • Verdient (earns), Freiheit (freedom) and gewinnt (wins) are the words that unlock the correct answers here

Higher tier

Worked Example

Read the article about Leon Fischer and answer the questions in English.

  1. When and how did Leon become famous? Give two details.

  2. What does Leon do as part of his career? Give two details.

  3. How does Leon appear in public?

  4. What does Leon find dangerous?

  5. What does Leon say is the biggest disadvantage of being famous?

Answers:

  1. two years ago, with a song on social media

  2. he does advertising for fashion, he gives interviews in the newspaper

  3. always happy and popular

  4. that young people see his life on social media and think everything is perfect

  5. that he hardly has a private life any more

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Always read the whole text before answering

  • Look out for contrast words - aber (but) and Aber die Wirklichkeit ist anders (but the reality is different) signal a shift from positive to negative

  • Questions 3 and 4 both target information from the second paragraph, which contrasts with the positive image described in the first

Being famous: writing

  • In the writing paper, you will need to produce accurate written German across a range of task types

  • This task will help you practise extended writing and translation into German

Foundation tier

  • The 90-word writing task is shared between Foundation and Higher tiers — the same question appears on both papers

Worked Example

Your German friend has asked you to write an online article about a celebrity.

Write approximately 90 words in German.

You must write something about each bullet point.

Describe:

  • a celebrity you find interesting and why.

  • something this celebrity has done recently.

  • what you think about being famous in the future.

Example answer of approximately 90 words:

This answer includes:

  • Three tenses - present (ist, spielt, macht), perfect (hat gegeben, hat gesprochen) and future (möchte)

  • Negation (Foundation) - nicht berühmt sein, nicht einfach, keine Freiheit

  • Negation (Higher upgrade) - Higher students could replace nicht einfach ist with weder einfach noch privat ist, and add kaum for additional sophistication

  • weil clause - weil das Leben eines Stars nicht einfach ist - verb to the end

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure you cover all three bullet points - each one requires a different tense

  • At Foundation tier, use nicht and keine to express negatives clearly and accurately

  • At Higher tier, try upgrading to weder … noch and kaum in the third bullet point to add sophistication and demonstrate strong knowledge of grammar

Higher tier

Worked Example

Translate these sentences into German.

  1. She is no longer as well known as before.

  2. The life of a celebrity is neither easy nor private.

  3. If I were a star, I would have no freedom.

  4. The media do not yet report on her career.

  5. Famous people can hardly have a private life.

Answers:

  1. Sie ist nicht mehr so bekannt wie früher. - nicht mehr = no longer; so…wie = as…as

  2. Das Leben von einem Star ist weder einfach noch privat. - weder … noch links two negative elements; verb stays in second position after each

  3. Wenn ich ein Star wäre, hätte ich keine Freiheit. - wäre and hätte are imperfect subjunctive forms

  4. Die Medien berichten noch nicht über ihre Karriere. - noch nicht = not yet; berichten über = to report on

  5. Berühmte Menschen können kaum ein privates Leben haben. - kaum = hardly; infinitive haben goes to the end after modal können
