  • The topic of 'Life at school' is one of the most common topics across all four exam skills - you might be asked to compare subjects, describe your school and its facilities, give opinions on school rules, or understand what others think about their education

  • Let's use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them

Life at school: listening

  • In the listening exam, there will be questions where you need to choose the correct answer from three options

  • Listen carefully to the whole extract — the speaker may mention more than one of the options, so you need to decide which one best matches what they say

Worked Example

Anna is talking about her school day.

Choose the correct answer and write the letter in the box.

Life at school

/
00:00
  1. Anna's favourite subject is...
    A. Maths B. German C. History

  2. Anna thinks the teachers are…
    A. strict B. friendly C. boring

  3. At break time, Anna...
    A. stays in school B. goes home C. plays sport

Answers:

Here are the correct answers:

  1. B - Mein Lieblingsfach ist Deutsch.

  2. B - Meine Lehrer sind meistens freundlich.

  3. A - In der Pause bleibe ich in der Schule.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Watch out for distractors - Anna mentions Geschichte and Mathe as well as Deutsch, but only Deutsch is her favourite

  • Always listen for the word or phrase that directly answers the question, not just any word you recognise

Life at school: speaking

  • In part 3 of the speaking exam, you need to describe two photos and then have a conversation with your teacher about the theme covered in the photos

  • This question will help you to practise describing a photo on the topic of life at school

Worked Example

Sag mir etwas über das Foto.

life at school

Answer:

Here is an example answer.

Auf dem Foto gibt es einige Schüler und eine Lehrerin. Ich denke, dass die Lehrerin nett ist, weil sie den Schülern hilft. Sie sind in einem modernen Klassenzimmer und es gibt einen Computer und einige Bücher. Die Schüler tragen eine Uniform, also denke ich, dass die Schule vielleicht in England ist. Meiner Meinung nach sind die Schüler ruhig und ernst, und ich glaube, dass sie dieses Fach interessant finden, weil sie viel schreiben.

In the photo there are some students and a teacher. I think the teacher is nice because she is helping the students. They are in a modern classroom and there is a computer and some books. The students are wearing a uniform, so I think the school might be in England. In my opinion, the students are hardworking and serious and I believe they find this subject interesting because they are writing a lot.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Use the acronym PALM to structure your photo description - People and objects, Action, Location, Mood. Look at how the PALM elements are covered in the answer above:

  • People and objects: einige Schüler und eine Lehrerin; einen Computer und einige Bücher

  • Action: die Lehrerin hilft den Schülern; die Schüler tragen eine Uniform; sie schreiben viel

  • Location: in einem modernen Klassenzimmer

  • Mood: die Schüler sind ruhig und ernst; sie finden dieses Fach interessant

Life at school: reading

  • In the reading exam, you will need to identify different time frames and say what people do in the past, present and future

  • Look out for time phrases to help you, for example, früher (in the past / previously), im Moment (at the moment), nächstes Jahr (next year)

  • You should also be able to identify time frames from the verb itself - look out for present tense verb endings, past participles with haben or sein, and werden + infinitive or möchte + infinitive to indicate the future

Worked Example

Jens is talking about school. What does he say about each aspect?
Write P for something he did in the past.
Write N for something he does now.
Write F for something he wants to do in future.

Im Moment lerne ich sehr viel, weil wir bald wichtige Prüfungen haben. Nächstes Jahr möchte ich auf die Oberstufe gehen und mein Abitur machen. Früher habe ich viel Sport getrieben, aber jetzt habe ich leider keine Zeit mehr dafür. Ich hatte auch Probleme mit meinem Mathelehrer - er war sehr streng und die Stunden waren sehr schwer.

  • studying hard

  • doing sport

  • changing schools

  • having problems with a teacher

Answers:

Here are the correct answers:

  • studying a lot - N
im Moment lerne ich sehr viel

  • doing sport - P
früher habe ich viel Sport getrieben

  • changing schools - F
nächstes Jahr möchte ich auf die Oberstufe gehen

  • having problems with a teacher - P
ich hatte Probleme mit meinem Mathelehrer

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Here are the key time phrases and verb forms from the text that indicate each time frame:

    • Present - im Moment (at the moment)

    • Past - früher (previously)

    • Future - nächstes Jahr (next year)

  • Notice that there are two past answers - always read the whole text carefully before writing your answers, as more than one aspect can refer to the same time frame

Life at school: writing

Foundation

In the Foundation writing paper, there will be a question where you need to write a 50-word response guided by bullet points.

Worked Example

You are taking part in an exchange with an Austrian school. Write a short description of your school for the exchange students.
Write approximately 50 words in German.
You must write something about each bullet point.
Mention:

  • school subjects

  • your teachers

  • school facilities

  • the school day

  • your uniform

Answer:

Here is an example response of approximately 50 words.

Ich lerne neun Fächer, zum Beispiel Mathe, Biologie und Deutsch. Ich finde Deutsch toll, weil es nützlich ist. Die Lehrer sind nett und hilfsbereit, aber manchmal ein bisschen streng. Es gibt eine große Bibliothek hier. Wir haben eine Pause um elf Uhr. Wir müssen eine schwarze Uniform tragen, die ziemlich praktisch ist.

I study nine subjects, for example maths, biology and German. I find German great because it is useful. The teachers are nice and helpful but sometimes a little strict. There is a large library here. We have a break at eleven o'clock. We have to wear a black uniform, which is quite practical.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • One way to achieve variety of language is to refer to different people - this response includes 'I', 'we' and the impersonal verb phrase es gibt

  • Notice also how a simple opinion with a reason (ich finde Deutsch toll, weil es nützlich ist) and a modal verb (wir müssen … tragen) lift the response above a basic list of facts

  • Tick off each bullet point as you cover it, and always check your work carefully once you have finished

Higher tier

In the Higher writing paper, there will be a question where you need to write a 150-word response guided by bullet points.

Worked Example

You are writing a post for your school website.

Write approximately 150 words in German.

Describe:

  • the importance of working hard at school

  • how you will improve your grades in future

Answer:

Here is an example response of approximately 150 words.

In my opinion it is very important to work hard at school if you want to be successful later. When I was younger, I did not study enough and my grades were quite bad. Now I know, however, that schoolwork is important for my future. I find that you can get better grades if you work hard. My teachers always say that you must be well organised, and that is true. German is the most interesting subject in school, although I also like maths a lot - I think that both subjects are more useful than people think.

In the future I will try to improve my grades. For example, I find physics difficult, so I will ask questions when I don't understand something and concentrate better in lessons. I will also go to the library regularly to do my homework. If I continue to work hard, I am sure that I will pass my exams.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • When completing the 150-word writing task, you need to be confident using a range of tenses, as the bullet points will require different time frames

    This response includes:

    • a range of tenses to match the task

    • different subjects

    • a range of conjunctions

    • different opinion phrases

    • extended clauses using subordinate structures

  • Tick off each bullet point as you cover it

  • Always check your work carefully at the end, especially word order
