Read aloud and short conversation

  • The read aloud task and short conversation is worth 15 marks

  • It will last between 2 and 2.5 minutes at Foundation tier and between 3 and 3.5 minutes at Higher tier

  • You will read aloud a short text in German then answer four questions about the same topic

  • The text will be around 35 words long at Foundation tier, and around 50 words long at Higher tier

  • You will not see the four questions in advance, so you will not be able to prepare them

  • You must not practise reading your text out loud in the supervised preparation time

Tips for success - reading aloud

  • A strong knowledge of phonics is essential

  • Although it is very useful to know what the text means, it is not essential - you just have to be able to pronounce the words correctly

  • Speak clearly and slowly - there are no marks for speed

  • You can make minor errors and still get full marks

  • Although you can't practise reading aloud, you can mentally rehearse the text during your preparation time

Tips for success - short conversation

  • During your preparation time, think about what you might be asked on the topic and how you might respond

  • For the highest marks, try to give developed answers rather than single words or short phrases

  • Include opinions and reasons to help with this, e.g. Ich gehe gern mit meinen Freunden aus + weil es immer Spaß macht

  • If you want your teacher to repeat the question, you must ask in German, e.g., Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? or Wie bitte?

  • Your teacher will be reading out the set questions they are given, so they are not allowed to rephrase the questions
