  • The topic of 'Role Models' can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to talk about someone who inspires you, describe personality traits, or understand what others say about the people they admire

  • Let's use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them

Role models: listening

  • In the listening exam, you will need to answer questions about spoken extracts

  • This task practises completing sentences in English based on what you hear - think carefully about what type of information might complete each gap before you listen

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Lena is talking about her role model. Complete the sentences in English.

  1. Lena's role model is her …

  1. Her role model is always …

  2. Her role model helps Lena with …

  3. Lena finds her …

Answers:

1. her teacher
Mein Vorbild ist meine Lehrerin.

2. kind and patient
Sie ist immer freundlich und geduldig.

3. her problems
Sie hilft mir mit meinen Problemen.

4. very honest and creative
Ich finde sie sehr ehrlich und kreativ.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Use the reading time before the recording starts to predict what kind of information is missing - sentence 1 needs a person, sentences 2 and 4 need adjectives, sentence 3 needs a subject area or context

Higher tier

Worked Example

Jonas is talking about his role model. Complete the sentences in English.

  1. Jonas's role model is …

  2. He likes him because …

  4. What does the press think of Jonas' role model?

  5. In future, Jonas wants to …

Answers:

1. a well-known and successful singer
Mein Vorbild ist ein bekannter und erfolgreicher Sänger.

2. he is not only generous but also responsible
Ich mag ihn, weil er nicht nur großzügig, sondern auch verantwortlich ist

3. young people
Er hat einen großen Einfluss auf junge Menschen.

4. they sometimes find him difficult
Trotzdem findet die Presse ihn manchmal schwierig

5. be a responsible role model himself
In der Zukunft möchte ich selbst ein verantwortliches Vorbild sein.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • At Higher tier, negative structures like nie and nicht can completely change the meaning of a sentence

  • If you miss a negative word, your answer may be the opposite of what was said

  • Always listen out for nicht, nie, nichts and niemand - they are small words that carry a lot of meaning

Role models: speaking

  • In part 2 of the speaking exam, you will read aloud a short text in German and then answer four unprepared questions based on the topic of the text

Foundation tier

Worked Example

When your teacher asks you, read aloud the following text in German.

Mein Vorbild ist mein Vater.

Er ist immer freundlich und geduldig.

Er hilft mir mit meinen Problemen und versteht mich immer.

Er ist nie negativ oder böse.

Er ist immer sehr positiv.

You will then be asked four questions in German that relate to the topic of role models. In order to score the highest marks, you must try to answer all four questions as fully as you can.

Answers - you should have:

  • Pronounced v correctly as [f] in Vorbild, Vater, versteht, positiv

  • Remembered that nie contains a long [i] sound, like 'ee' in English

Example questions and answers:

  • Wer ist dein Vorbild?
Mein Vorbild ist mein Vater, weil er immer ehrlich und hilfsbereit ist.
My role model is my father, because he is always honest and helpful.

  • Was macht dein Vorbild für dich?
Er hilft mir mit meinen Problemen und unterstützt mich immer.
He helps me with my problems and always supports me.

  • Wie ist dein Vorbild?
Er ist sehr freundlich, geduldig und kreativ.
He is very kind, patient and creative.

  • Was macht ein gutes Vorbild?
Ein gutes Vorbild ist ehrlich und hilft anderen Menschen.
A good role model is honest and helps other people.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • During the read-aloud, speak clearly and at a natural pace - don't rush

  • The four questions that follow are unprepared, so listen carefully and use vocabulary from the vocabulary section to help you respond

  • You must include a verb in each response

Higher tier

Worked Example

When your teacher asks you, read aloud the following text in German.

Vorbilder sind sehr wichtig für junge Menschen.

Ein gutes Vorbild verhält sich immer verantwortlich und versucht, anderen zu helfen.

Es ist nicht genug, nur erfolgreich oder beliebt zu sein.

Ein Vorbild muss auch ehrlich und großzügig sein.

Der Einfluss eines Vorbilds auf junge Menschen kann sehr positiv sein.

You will then be asked four questions in German that relate to the topic of role models. In order to score the highest marks, you must try to answer all four questions as fully as you can.

Answers - you should have:

  • Pronounced v correctly as [f] in Vorbilder, verhält, verantwortlich, versucht, Vorbild, positiv

Example questions and answers:

  • Warum sind Vorbilder wichtig?
Vorbilder sind wichtig, weil junge Menschen von ihnen lernen und ihr Verhalten beobachten.
Role models are important because young people learn from them and observe their behaviour.

  • Was für Eigenschaften hat ein gutes Vorbild?
Meiner Meinung nach muss ein gutes Vorbild ehrlich, großzügig und verantwortlich sein.
In my opinion a good role model must be honest, generous and responsible.

  • Welche Person magst du als Vorbild und warum?
Ich mag meinen Lehrer als Vorbild, weil er mir immer vertraut und mich unterstützt.
I like my teacher as a role model because he always trusts me and supports me.

  • Warum können berühmte Personen schlechte Vorbilder sein?
Sie können schlechte Vorbilder sein, weil sie sich nicht verantwortlich verhalten oder weil ihr Einfluss negativ ist.
They can be bad role models because they don't behave responsibly or because their influence is negative.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • At Higher tier, the four questions will push beyond the text into wider discussion - you may be asked about your own opinions, wider society, or hypothetical situations

  • Use structures like Meiner Meinung nach…, Ich finde, dass… and Obwohl… to give developed, sophisticated answers

  • The examiner rewards variety of vocabulary and structures, not just correct grammar

Role models: reading

  • In the reading paper, you will need to understand written German and answer questions in English

  • This task will help you practise reading for detail and understanding a range of vocabulary and structures

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Read the text about Max's role model and answer the questions in English.

Mein Vorbild ist mein älterer Bruder Jonas. Er ist immer freundlich und hilfsbereit. Er hilft mir mit den Hausaufgaben, weil er geduldig ist. Er ist nie böse oder negativ. Ich finde ihn sehr kreativ und ehrlich. Wenn ich Probleme habe, ist er immer da für mich - er begleitet mich durchs Leben.

  1. Who is Max's role model? Write the correct letter.

A

his father

B

his older brother

C

his teacher

  1. Name two positive qualities Max mentions.

  2. Why does Jonas help Max with his homework?

  3. What is Jonas like when Max has problems?

  4. Read the last sentence again. What does er begleitet mich durchs Leben mean? Write the correct letter.

A

he competes with me

B

he accompanies me and is there for me

C

he teaches me German

Answers:

  1. B - his older brother

  2. any two from: friendly / helpful / patient / creative / honest

  3. because he is patient

  4. he is always there for him

  5. B - he accompanies me and is there for me

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Before answering, read the whole text through once to get the overall meaning

  • For the unfamiliar word question, use context - the sentence tells us Jonas is always da für mich (there for me), which points clearly to B

  • Option A (argues) and C (ignores) are ruled out by the positive tone of the whole text

Higher tier

Worked Example

Read the text and answer the questions in English.

  1. What does Jonas think about having a role model?

  2. Give two ways in which Jonas describes Herr Bauer's behaviour.

  3. Why does Jonas trust Herr Bauer?

  4. What does Jonas think about famous people as role models? Give two details.

  5. What does Jonas say a truly good role model must be?

Answers:

  1. he thinks it is very important to have a good role model

  2. any two from: always behaves responsibly / treats all pupils fairly / he is honest

  3. because he always helps Jonas when he has problems

  4. any two from: they are not always good role models / they are successful and rich / their influence on young people is not always positive

  5. generous and helpful - not just famous

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • At Higher tier, questions often ask for opinions and reasons, not just facts

  • Question 1 asks what Jonas thinks - look for opinion phrases like Meiner Meinung nach and Ich finde

  • Question 4 requires you to identify a contrasting viewpoint - the structure zwar … aber signals a contrast, meaning 'admittedly … but'

  • What comes after aber is often the key point the question is targeting

Role models: writing

Foundation tier

  • In the writing paper, you will need to demonstrate accurate use of German grammar and vocabulary

  • This task will help you practise choosing the correct grammatical form

Worked Example

Choose the correct word to complete each sentence. Write the correct word in the gap.

  1. ____ ist dein Vorbild?

    wer

    wen

    wem

  2. Mein Bruder ist immer freundlich und ____.

    geduldig

    geduldige

    geduldigem

  3. Ich mag mein Vorbild, ____ er immer ehrlich ist.

    aber

    weil

    oder

  4. Er ____ einen großen Einfluss auf junge Menschen.

    habe

    hat

    hast

  5. ____ Person findest du am kreativsten?

    welcher

    welche

    welches

Answers:

  1. Wer - nominative form, used when 'who' is the subject of the sentence

  2. geduldig - adjective after sein takes no ending

  3. weil - a subordinating conjunction sends the verb to the end: weil er ehrlich ist

  4. hat - er is third person singular of the verb haben

  5. welche - agrees with Person, which is feminine (die Person)

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • For gap-fill grammar tasks, always look at the word or noun that follows the gap - it gives you a clue

  • If you see a verb directly after the gap, it's likely to be a question word or conjunction

  • If you see a noun, think about its gender to choose the right form of the adjective

Higher tier

  • The 90-word writing task is shared between Foundation and Higher tiers - the same question appears on both papers

Worked Example

Your German friend has asked you about role models. Write a reply. Write approximately 90 words in German. You must write something about each bullet point.

Describe:

  • who your role model is and why.

  • something they have done recently.

  • what kind of role model you would like to be in the future.

Example answer:

This answer includes:

  • Three tenses - present (ist, unterstützt, verhält), perfect (hat geholfen, hat gegeben) and future (möchte, werde versuchen)

  • weil clauses - weil sie sich verantwortlich verhält and weil das meiner Meinung nach sehr wichtig ist

  • Negation - nie gemein oder böse

  • Opinion phrase - meiner Meinung nach with correct verb inversion

  • Higher vocabulary - vertrauen, verantwortlich, großzügig, sich verhalten

  • Third person feminine forms - sie, ihr used consistently and correctly throughout

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure you cover all three bullet points - examiners will check each one

  • Use a different tense for each bullet point to show range: present for the first, perfect for the second, and future for the third

  • Pay close attention to verb forms when writing about a female role model - sie hat geholfen, sie verhält sich, ich vertraue ihr - correct pronoun and agreement will earn marks
