  • The topic of 'Shopping' can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to understand information about prices, clothing and opinions on shopping, or to speak and write about your own shopping habits and preferences

  • Let's use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them

Shopping: listening

Foundation tier

  • In the listening exam, there will be some multiple-choice questions where you need to select the correct ending for each sentence

  • This question will help you to practise this skill

Worked Example

Three people are talking about shopping.
Choose the correct answer and write the letter.

Anna
00:00
/
00:00
Felix
00:00
/
00:00
Sophie
00:00
/
00:00

1. Anna is going shopping today because she wants to buy …
A. a present for her mother.
B. a new dress for a party.
C. a jacket for school.

2. Felix thinks shopping in town is …
A. very good value.
B. too expensive.
C. more fun than online shopping.

3. Sophie recently spent …
A. thirty euros.
B. fifty euros.
C. eighty euros.

Answers:

  • 1A
    ein Geschenk für meine Mutter

  • 2B
    viel zu teuer

  • 3C
    achtzig Euro

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Notice that all three speakers mention clothing or shopping, so you cannot rely on topic words alone to find the right answer

  • Listen carefully for specific details like names, prices and reasons, as these are what the questions test

Higher tier

  • In the Higher listening exam, you may be asked to answer questions in English based on a longer spoken passage

  • This question will help you to practise this skill

Worked Example

Klara is talking about her shopping habits. Answer the questions in English.

Shopping
00:00
/
00:00
  1. Why does Klara prefer shopping online? Give two details. [2 marks]

  2. What did she buy recently, and for what occasion? [2 marks]

  3. What does she say about the price? [1 mark]

  4. What is she doing now, and why? [2 marks]

Answers:

  1. It is more practical [1] / you can compare everything [1] / you don't have to travel into town [1] (any two)

  2. A red dress [1] for a wedding [1]

  3. She could barely afford it / it cost almost two hundred euros [1]

  4. She is saving money [1] so she can buy new shoes next month [1]

Shopping: speaking

  • In part 2 of the speaking exam, you will read aloud a short text in German and then answer four unprepared questions from your teacher on the same topic

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Read aloud the following text in German.

Ich kaufe gern Kleidung in der Stadt.
Am Samstag gehe ich oft in den Supermarkt.
Meine Lieblingsfarbe ist blau.
Letzte Woche habe ich ein schwarzes T-Shirt gekauft.
Es hat zwanzig Euro gekostet.

You will then be asked four questions in German that relate to the topic of shopping. In order to score the highest marks, you must try to answer all four questions as fully as you can.

Example questions and model answers:

  • Was kaufst du gern? Ich kaufe gern Kleidung und Schuhe.

  • Wie findest du Einkaufen? Ich finde Einkaufen sehr schön, weil es Spaß macht.

  • Wo kaufst du am liebsten ein? Ich kaufe am liebsten in der Stadt ein.

  • Was hast du neulich gekauft? Ich habe neulich ein weißes Hemd gekauft.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • The four questions are not about the text itself - they are unprepared questions on the broader topic of shopping

  • You will not see them in advance, so use your preparation time to think about how you would answer common shopping questions using vocabulary and grammar from this unit

  • Even short answers score marks, as long as they include a verb

Higher tier

Worked Example

When your teacher asks you, read aloud the following text in German.

Viele Jugendliche kaufen lieber online ein.
Es ist praktischer und oft günstiger als in der Stadt.
Man kann alle Preise vergleichen, ohne das Haus zu verlassen.
Mode interessiert mich sehr, aber gute Kleidung ist mir wichtiger als der Preis.
Meiner Meinung nach sollte man nicht zu viel Geld ausgeben.

You will then be asked four questions in German that relate to the topic of shopping. In order to score the highest marks, you must try to answer all four questions as fully as you can.

Example questions and model answers:

  • Kaufst du lieber online oder in der Stadt ein? Ich gehe lieber in die Stadt, weil ich die Kleidung probieren möchte.

  • Was hast du neulich gekauft und wie viel hat es gekostet? Letzte Woche habe ich meiner Mutter eine Tasche gekauft. Sie war nicht sehr teuer.

  • Wie wichtig ist Mode für dich? Mode ist mir nicht so wichtig. Ich kaufe lieber billige Kleidung.

  • Was machst du mit deinem Geld? Ich gebe mein Geld oft für Kleidung und Schuhe aus.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • At Higher tier, the examiner rewards developed answers - try to add a reason, an opinion or an extra detail to each response rather than stopping at the minimum

  • Notice how the model answers above use connectives like weil, aber and damit to build longer, more complex sentences

Shopping: reading

  • In the reading exam, you may be asked to identify the positive and negative aspects of a topic

  • Look for positive and negative language such as opinions, adjectives and key words like Vorteil ('advantage') and Nachteil ('disadvantage') to help you identify the relevant information

Foundation tier

Worked Example

You read an article about shopping. Jonas is describing his shopping habits. Answer the questions in English.

Ich kaufe gern im Supermarkt ein, weil die Preise günstig sind. Man findet alles an einem Ort, und das ist sehr praktisch. Außerdem macht Einkaufen mit Freunden viel Spaß. Jedoch gibt es auch Nachteile. Der Supermarkt ist manchmal sehr voll und laut. Man gibt auch zu viel Geld aus, weil man Dinge kauft, die man nicht braucht.

1. According to Jonas, what are two advantages of shopping at the supermarket? [2 marks]

2. According to Jonas, what are two disadvantages? [2 marks]

Answers:

1. The prices are cheap/good value [1] / you can find everything in one place / it is practical [1] / it is fun with friends [1] (any two)

2. It can be very busy and noisy [1] / you spend too much money on things you don't need [1]

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • The word jedoch (however) is a strong signal that the text is switching from advantages to disadvantages

  • Other words to watch for include aber (but), leider (unfortunately) and Nachteil (disadvantage) - these signal a shift in tone and help you locate the negative points quickly

Higher tier

Worked Example

You read these blog posts about shopping.

Sophie

Write S for Sophie, T for Tobias, S+T for both.

Who ...

1. has had a negative experience with online shopping?

2. finds shopping enjoyable?

3. prefers to buy things at a lower price?

4. is trying to spend less money?

Answers:

1. S

2. S+T

3. T

4. T

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • For question 3, the key phrase in Tobias's text is man findet immer ein gutes Angebot - Angebot means 'offer' or 'deal', so this confirms he actively looks for lower prices

  • Some statements may apply to both speakers - read both texts carefully before deciding

  • For S+T answers, both speakers must clearly support the statement

Shopping: writing

Foundation tier

  • In the Foundation writing paper, you are required to write a 50-word response guided by bullet points

Worked Example

You are writing a post for your school website about shopping. Write approximately 50 words in German. You must write something about each bullet point.

Mention:

  • your opinion of shopping

  • where you shop

  • what you like to buy

  • something you bought recently

  • something you would like to buy in future

Answer: Here is an example response of 47 words.

Ich finde Einkaufen sehr schön, weil es viel Spaß macht. Ich kaufe meistens in der Stadt ein, aber manchmal auch online. Ich kaufe gern Kleidung und Schuhe. Letzte Woche habe ich ein schwarzes Hemd für zwanzig Euro gekauft. In der Zukunft möchte ich eine neue Jacke kaufen.

In my opinion, shopping is great because it is a lot of fun. I usually shop in town but sometimes online too. I like buying clothes and shoes. Last week I bought a black shirt for twenty euros. In the future I would like to buy a new jacket.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • The most important thing in this question is to cover all five bullet points clearly

  • Aim for one clear sentence per bullet point

  • You will not be penalised for writing more than 50 words, but make sure you do not spend so long on one bullet point that you run out of space for the others

  • Every sentence must include a verb

Higher tier

  • In the writing paper, you are required to write a 90-word response guided by bullet points

  • The same question will appear on both Foundation and Higher papers

Worked Example

You are writing a post for your school website about shopping. Write approximately 90 words in German. You must write something about each bullet point.

Mention:

  • your opinion of shopping and where you shop

  • something you bought recently

  • what you would like to buy in future and why

Answer: Here is an example response of approximately 90 words.

In my opinion, shopping is very important, but you should not spend too much money. My sister finds online shopping annoying because you cannot see the clothes before you buy them. However, I find it very practical because you do not have to leave the house. I prefer shopping at the supermarket because I can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, as I want to live healthily.

Last week I bought a present for my brother with my mother. We found a nice blue jacket that was not too expensive.

Next month I would like to buy new shoes because my old shoes are broken.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Introducing a third person such as meine Schwester is a good way to vary your language and show range

  • This question always requires you to use three tenses: present, past and future - make sure your answer includes all of them

  • All bullet points are compulsory and must be covered, but there is no need for equal coverage of the bullet points (as you can see in the example response)
