Let's look in more detail at the types of question in Section B, and how to achieve top marks.

Section B: reading

  • Section B is worth 10 marks at both tiers

  • It involves translating five sentences into English

  • At Foundation tier, you will translate around 35 words

  • At Higher tier, you will translate around 50 words

Tips for success

  • Avoid word-for-word translations - aim to convey the full meaning in the most natural English

  • Ensure that every detail is included in the translation, particularly small words like 'very' or 'not', which are easily missed

  • Remember the key differences in German and English sentence structure, e.g. word order rules

  • Be aware that some words may be false friends

  • If you don't know a word, use the words that you do know and can translate to help you to work it out, or at least to take an educated guess

  • Check your translations carefully when you have finished
