  • The topic of 'Tourist Attractions' can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to listen to or read about places to visit, describe a location you know, or write about somewhere you have been or would like to go

  • Let's use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them

Tourist attractions: listening

  • In the listening exam, you will hear several people speaking and need to match each speaker to the correct option from a list

  • There are always more options than speakers, so not every letter will be used

  • Before you listen, use the reading time to think about the German vocabulary that might relate to each option

Foundation tier

Worked Example

You hear four people talking about a place they have visited.

What does each person say about the place? Write the correct letter.

Answers:

  • Anna: E

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Use the five minutes' reading time before the listening starts to note down German words you might hear for each option, for example, for option E (too many tourists) you might think of viele Touristen, zu voll or zu viele Leute/Menschen

  • This gives you key words to listen out for and helps you stay focused during the recording

Higher tier

  • In the Higher listening exam, the letter-matching question works in the same way but the language used by each speaker is more complex

  • Opinions may be expressed indirectly and you will need to infer meaning rather than match words directly

Worked Example

You hear four people giving their opinion about tourism.

What is each person's view? Write the correct letter.

Answers:

  • Julia: C
Ich finde, der Tourismus ist sehr wichtig für unsere Region. Durch die vielen Touristen haben die Läden und Restaurants in der Stadt viel mehr Erfolg - ohne sie würde die Wirtschaft hier leiden.

  • Tobias: A

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • At Higher tier, speakers don't always use the exact words from the options list

  • Listen for the overall message rather than individual key words, for example, Julia's mention of lokale Läden and Erfolg points clearly to economic benefits

  • Practise paraphrasing: ask yourself what each speaker is really saying

Tourist attractions: speaking

  • In the speaking exam, you will take part in a role-play

  • Your teacher will play the part of your friend and will speak first

  • You need to prepare answers to the prompts, and ask your teacher a question when you see the ? symbol

  • Each response must include a verb

Foundation tier

Worked Example

You are talking to your German friend about a visit to a tourist attraction. Your teacher will speak first.

  1. Say what tourist attraction you visited. (Give one detail.)

  2. Say what you thought of the visit. (Give one detail.)

  3. Say what you did there. (Give one detail.)

  4. Say what you would like to visit in future. (Give one detail.)

  5. ? Ask your friend a question about their town.

Example answers:

  1. Ich habe das Museum in der Stadt besucht. I visited the museum in the town.

  2. Es war sehr interessant. It was very interesting.

  3. Ich habe Karten gekauft und Fotos gemacht. I bought tickets and took photos.

  4. Ich möchte ein Schloss besuchen. I would like to visit a castle.

  5. Was gibt es in deiner Stadt zu sehen? What is there to see in your town?

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Focus on conveying the message clearly - each task is worth 2 marks for communication, awarded when the message is understood without ambiguity

  • A verb is required in every response

  • Stick to the number of details asked for in each prompt: giving information than required gains no extra marks and could introduce errors that affect your score

Higher tier

  • The Higher role-play follows the same format as Foundation, but most prompts ask for two details rather than one

  • The language and topics are also more demanding

Worked Example

You are talking to your Austrian friend about tourism and places to visit. Your teacher will speak first.

  1. Say what tourists can do in your region. (Give two details.)

  2. Give your opinion of tourism. (Give two details.)

  3. Say what you did on your last visit to a tourist attraction. (Give two details.)

  4. Say what you would like to do as a tourist in future. (Give two details.)

  5. ? Ask your friend a question about their favourite place.

Example answers:

  1. Man kann das historische Schloss besuchen und am Strand spazieren gehen. You can visit the historical castle and go for a walk on the beach.

  2. Ich finde Tourismus wichtig, weil man die Kultur eines Ortes entdecken kann. Es gibt aber manchmal zu viele Touristen. I think tourism is important because you can discover the culture of a place. However, there are sometimes too many tourists.

  3. Ich habe eine Ausstellung im Museum gesehen und danach haben wir in einem Restaurant gegessen. I saw an exhibition in the museum and afterwards we ate in a restaurant.

  4. Ich würde gern die Hauptstadt besuchen und die Geschichte der Stadt entdecken. I would like to visit the capital city and discover the history of the city.

  5. Was ist deine Lieblingsstadt in Österreich? What is your favourite city in Austria?

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • The marking criteria are the same as Foundation - 2 marks per task for conveying the message without ambiguity, with a verb required in every response

  • Where a prompt asks for two details, you must give both clearly to score full marks, but do not go beyond what is asked, as additional information gains no extra marks and could introduce errors

Tourist attractions: reading

  • In the reading exam, you may be asked to identify opinions from a text

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Four people are writing about a tourist attraction they visited. What is each person's opinion?

Write P for a positive opinion, N for a negative opinion, P + N for a positive and negative opinion.

Anna

  • Anna

  • Felix

  • Sophie

  • Jan

Answers:

  • Anna: P
    wirklich toll, sehr interessant

  • Felix: N
nicht so interessant, zu viele Touristen, nicht gut organisiert

  • Sophie: P + N
sehr schön, sehr kalt, hat geregnet

  • Jan: P
    wirklich toll, mehr ... lernen

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Always read the whole text before deciding on your answer - a P + N answer needs both a positive and a negative opinion in the same text

  • Watch out for contrast words like aber (but) and obwohl (although) - they often signal a switch from positive to negative or vice versa

Higher tier

  • In the reading exam, you may be asked to identify whether statements from a text refer to the past, the present or the future

  • Read the article carefully and look for time markers and verb tenses to help you decide

Worked Example

You read an article about tourism in Cologne.

*der Dom - the cathedral
*Sehenswürdigkeiten - tourist attractions, sights

What does the article say about each of these topics?
Write P for past, N for now, F for future.

  1. The cathedral being a tourist attraction

  2. Six million people visiting Cologne

  3. Opening a new café by the river

  4. Increasing international tourism

Answers:

  1. P - war schon immer eine der wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten (has always been one of the most important attractions - refers to the past)

  2. P - letztes Jahr haben mehr als sechs Millionen Menschen die Stadt besucht (last year)

  3. N - Gerade öffnet die Stadt auch ein neues Café am Fluss (this is happening now)

  4. F - möchte in der Zukunft mehr Touristen aus anderen Ländern einladen (in the future the city wants to)

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Time markers are your biggest clue - look for words and phrases like:

    • letztes Jahr (last year), früher (previously), schon immer (always) for past

    • im Moment (at the moment), zurzeit (currently), jetzt (now) for present

    • in der Zukunft (in the future), bald (soon), werden + infinitive for future

  • Verb tenses alone can also guide you:

    • perfect tense and imperfect signal past

    • present tense signals now

    • werden + infinitive or wollen/sollen signal future intentions

Tourist attractions: writing

Foundation tier

  • In the Foundation writing exam, one question asks you to translate sentences from English into German

  • There are at least 35 words to translate in total

  • This tests your ability to use the vocabulary and grammar from the specification accurately

Worked Example

Translate the following sentences into German.

  1. I like visiting a market.

  2. The church is very old and beautiful.

  3. There are many tourists in the city.

  4. I would like to experience the culture in the region.

  5. Last year we travelled to the beach by car.

Answers:

  1. Ich besuche gern einen Markt.

  2. Die Kirche ist sehr alt und schön.

  3. Es gibt viele Touristen in der Stadt.

  4. Ich möchte die Kultur in der Region erleben.

  5. Letztes Jahr sind wir mit dem Auto zum Strand gefahren.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Look out for structures that change significantly when translated into German

  • In sentence 3, there are becomes es gibt + accusative in German - not es sind

  • In sentence 4, möchte is followed by the infinitive at the end of the clause

  • In sentence 5, the perfect tense requires the auxiliary verb sein and the past participle gefahren at the end

Higher tier

  • In the Higher writing exam, the translation question requires a minimum of 50 words

  • The sentences are longer and more complex, testing various different grammar points

Worked Example

Translate the following sentences into German.

  1. Many tourists visit the region because it helps the economy.

  2. Last summer I visited a well-known exhibition with my family.

  3. In my opinion the old market is very interesting.

  4. I would like to visit Vienna because the city is beautiful.

  5. Next year we are going to spend two weeks at the beach.

Answers:

  1. Viele Touristen besuchen die Region, weil es der Wirtschaft hilft.

  2. Letzten Sommer habe ich mit meiner Familie eine bekannte Ausstellung besucht.

  3. Meiner Meinung nach ist der alte Markt sehr interessant.

  4. Ich möchte / würde gern Wien besuchen, weil die Stadt schön ist.

  5. Nächstes Jahr werden wir zwei Wochen am Strand verbringen.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • At Higher tier, subordinating conjunctions such as weil send the verb to the end of the clause - check this every time

  • In sentence 1, weil es der Wirtschaft hilft places hilft at the end

  • In sentence 4, möchte / würde gern + infinitive places besuchen at the end of its clause

  • In sentence 5, the future tense uses werden in second position with the infinitive (verbringen) at the end

  • A common error is to forget the infinitive at the end - always check that your sentence has both parts of the verb
