Relationships: Exam Skills (AQA GCSE German): Revision Note

You hear some German teenagers talking about relationships. What does each speaker say about their relationship?

• Lena P - Ich verstehe mich sehr gut mit meiner Mutter, weil sie freundlich und geduldig ist. (I get on very well with my mother because she is friendly and patient.)

• Jonas P+N - Ich streite mich manchmal mit meinem Bruder, aber er ist eigentlich sehr nett. (I sometimes argue with my brother, but he is actually very nice.)

• Thomas N - Ich finde meinen Vater zu streng und manchmal auch gemein. (I find my father too strict and sometimes also mean.)

• Sara P+N - Meine Schwester ist manchmal frech, aber sie kümmert sich immer um mich. (My sister is sometimes cheeky, but she always takes care of me.)

Listen carefully for connecting words like aber (but) and weil (because) - these often signal that a speaker is about to give a contrasting or additional opinion, which could change your answer from P or N to P+N.

Auf dem Foto gibt es eine Gruppe von drei Freunden — zwei Mädchen und einen Jungen. Sie sitzen im Park und schauen zusammen auf einen Laptop. Sie lächeln und sehen sehr glücklich aus. Ich denke, dass sie Schüler sind und vielleicht machen sie ihre Hausaufgaben zusammen. Sie verstehen sich gut und ich glaube, dass sie eine gute Freundschaft haben.

In the photo there is a group of three friends — two girls and a boy. They are sitting in the park and looking at a laptop together. They are smiling and look very happy. I think that they are students and perhaps they are doing their homework together. They get on well and I believe that they have a good friendship.

Use the acronym PALM to help you describe a photo - People, Action, Location, Mood. Identify the aspects of PALM in the example answer above.

Translate these sentences into English.

1. Mein Partner ist ernst, aber sehr freundlich.

2. Meine Tante möchte ledig bleiben.

3. Ich muss besser mit meinen Freunden kommunizieren.

4. Ihre Eltern haben geheiratet.

5. Viele Paare entscheiden sich für eine zivile Partnerschaft.

1. My partner is serious but very friendly.
   Ernst means 'serious', not 'earnest' - watch out for this false friend.

2. My aunt would like to stay single.
   Möchte means 'would like to' - don't confuse it with muss (must/have to).

3. I have to / must communicate better with my friends.
   The noun Freunden is in the dative plural here - the English translation is simply 'friends'.

4. Her parents got married.
   This is the perfect tense - geheiratet is a past participle.

5. Many couples choose a civil partnership.
   We haven't translated word-for-word. Sich entscheiden für means 'to choose/decide on' - don't translate it literally as 'decide themselves for'.

Ich bin nicht sehr groß und habe kurze braune Haare und blaue Augen. Ich bin ziemlich freundlich und hilfsbereit, aber manchmal auch ein bisschen faul. In meiner Familie gibt es vier Personen. Ich streite mich oft mit meiner Schwester. Meine beste Freundin heißt Anna und wir verstehen uns gut. Ich finde die Ehe wichtig, weil man zusammen glücklich sein kann.

I am not very tall and I have short brown hair and blue eyes. I am quite friendly and helpful, but sometimes also a bit lazy. There are four people in my family. I often argue with my sister. My best friend is called Anna and we get on well. I think marriage is important because you can be happy together.

When completing a 50-word writing task, remember that you can just answer in the present tense, which will give access to full marks. Tick off each bullet point as you cover it, and always check your work carefully once you have finished. Look at the response above to identify where each bullet point is covered.

Translate these sentences into German.

1. In my opinion, it is very important to have a good relationship with your siblings.

2. Although my brother is sometimes jealous, he is usually very generous.

3. My best friend, who is very independent, never argues with her parents.

1. Meiner Meinung nach ist es sehr wichtig, eine gute Beziehung mit seinen Geschwistern zu haben.
   Meiner Meinung nach sends the verb (ist) straight to position 2. The infinitive phrase with zu goes to the end.

2. Obwohl mein Bruder manchmal eifersüchtig ist, ist er meistens sehr großzügig.
   Obwohl is a subordinating conjunction - the verb (ist) goes to the end of that clause. Notice the verb then comes immediately after the comma to begin the main clause: verb-comma-verb.

3. Meine beste Freundin, die sehr unabhängig ist, streitet sich nie mit ihren Eltern.
   The relative clause (die … ist) is sandwiched between commas. Streiten is reflexive - sich is needed here because the subject is third person feminine.

4. Ich glaube, dass es wichtig ist, sich gut zu verstehen, damit eine Freundschaft gut funktioniert.
   Dass sends the verb to the end of the clause

5. Ohne meine Freunde würde ich mich sehr traurig fühlen.
   Ohne takes the accusative. The conditional würde … fühlen sends the infinitive to the end. Sich fühlen is reflexive - don't forget mich here.
