  • The topic of 'social issues' can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to understand others talking about problems in society, discuss your own views, read about social issues in different contexts, or write about what you and others can do to help

  • Let's use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them

Social issues: listening

  • In the listening exam, one question type is a dictation

  • You will hear each sentence three times and must write it down exactly as you hear it in German

  • This tests both your listening skills and your accuracy in spelling

  • Read the instructions carefully and use the time before each sentence is read to prepare yourself

Social issues: speaking

  • In the Foundation speaking exam, one task is a photo card

  • You will look at two photos and describe what you can see

  • In the Higher speaking exam, one task is a role-play where you respond to five prompts, including one where you must ask a question

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Sag mir etwas über das Foto.

young people outside collecting rubbish which they will then recycle.

Example answer:

Auf dem Foto sehe ich eine Gruppe von jungen Menschen. Sie sind draußen, vielleicht in einem Park. Sie sammeln Müll und arbeiten zusammen. Ich glaube, sie machen das freiwillig und sehen sehr glücklich aus. Das finde ich sehr positiv, weil es wichtig ist, die Umwelt sauber zu halten.

In the photo I can see a group of young people. They are outside, perhaps in a park. They are collecting rubbish and working together. I think they do that voluntarily and look very happy. I find that very positive, because it is important to keep the environment clean.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Use the PALM structure to help you cover all aspects of the photo - People and objects, Action, Location, Mood

  • Aim to go beyond basic description by adding an opinion or reaction in your final sentence - this is where you can show off vocabulary and grammar you have learned

Higher tier

Worked Example

You are talking with a German volunteer coordinator about social issues.
Your teacher plays the role of the coordinator.
You must respond to all five prompts.

  1. Say what you think is the biggest social problem in your town. (Give two details.)

  2. Say how you help others. (Give two details.)

  3. Say what you would like to do in the future to help. (Give two details.)

  4. Say something about a social problem you find very serious.

  5. ? Ask your friend a question about social problems.

Answer:

  1. Ich finde, dass Arbeitslosigkeit ein großes Problem in meiner Stadt ist. Viele Menschen haben keine Arbeit und können ihre Familie nicht unterstützen.

I think that unemployment is a big problem in my town. Many people have no work and cannot support their family.

  2. Ich helfe freiwillig in einem Projekt in meiner Stadt. Wir kümmern uns um Menschen, die Hilfe brauchen.

I volunteer in a project in my town. We look after people who need help.

  3. In der Zukunft möchte ich mehr Zeit für soziale Projekte haben. Ich möchte auch Geld für arme Menschen sammeln.

In the future I would like to have more time for social projects. I would also like to collect money for poor people.

  4. Obwohl viele Menschen leiden, bekommt man nicht immer die nötige Unterstützung.

Although many people suffer, you do not always receive the necessary support.

  5. Was sind die größten sozialen Probleme in Deutschland?

What are the biggest social problems in Germany?

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • For the question prompt (?), make sure your question contains a verb

Social issues: reading

  • In the reading exam, you need to identify what people say about different aspects of a topic and decide whether each thing happened in the past, is happening now, or will happen in the future

  • This requires careful attention to verb tenses - look out for past participles, present tense endings, and future constructions, not just time phrases

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Julia has written a blog post about social issues in her area.

Write P for something that happened in the past.
Write N for something happening now.
Write F for something that will happen in the future.

  1. the police working hard

  2. feeling safer

  3. feeling afraid in town

  4. volunteering to help families

  5. collecting money

Answers:

  1. P - hat die Polizei hart gearbeitet

  2. N - die Menschen fühlen sich sicherer

  3. P - hatte ich Angst

  4. N - Ich helfe freiwillig

  5. F - Nächstes Jahr will ich Geld sammeln

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • The perfect tense uses a present tense form of haben or sein + a past participle - for example hat gearbeitet (has worked / worked)

  • Don't be misled by the present tense auxiliary into thinking the action is happening now

  • Always look at the past participle at the end of the clause to check whether the action is in the past

Higher tier

Worked Example

Tobias has written a blog post about social issues in his area.

Write P for something that happened in the past.
Write N for something happening now.
Write F for something that will happen in the future.

  1. high unemployment

  2. factories closing

  3. helping refugees

  4. finding affordable housing being difficult

  5. government spending more on social projects

Answers:

  1. P - Als ich jünger war, gab es sehr viele Probleme mit Arbeitslosigkeit

  2. P - viele Fabriken haben geschlossen

  3. N - Ich helfe im Moment in einer Gruppe

  4. N - Es ist noch immer schwierig

  5. F - sie mehr Geld … ausgeben wird

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Don't rely only on time phrases to identify tenses - look carefully at the verb forms too:

    • a past participle with hat or haben signals the perfect tense

    • a present tense verb signals now

    • werden + infinitive signals the future

  • At Higher tier, texts will often mix tenses within the same sentence, so read the whole sentence before deciding

Social issues: writing

  • In the Foundation writing exam, one task requires you to complete sentences using your knowledge of grammar - choosing the correct verb form, pronoun or adjective ending

  • In both the Foundation and Higher writing exam, one task requires you to write approximately 90 words in response to three bullet points

Foundation tier

Worked Example

Using your knowledge of grammar, complete the following sentences in German. Choose the correct word from the three options in the grid.

1. Viele Menschen ………………… keine Arbeit.

haben

habe

hat

The correct answer is haben. The subject Viele Menschen is plural, so the verb must be in the third person plural form.

2. ………………… helfe freiwillig in meiner Stadt.

Er

Ich

Du

The correct answer is Ich. The verb form helfe is first person singular, so the subject must be Ich.

3. Die Polizei kämpft gegen die ………………… Kriminalität.

hohen

hohes

hohe

The correct answer is hohe. Kriminalität is a feminine noun in the accusative case, following the definite article die, so the adjective ending is -e.

4. Es gibt viele soziale ………………… in unserer Gesellschaft.

Problem

Problemen

Probleme

The correct answer is Probleme. After viele, we need the plural form of das Problem, which is Probleme.

5. Wir müssen mehr für arme Menschen ………………… .

tut

tun

tue

The correct answer is tun. After the modal verb müssen, a second verb must be in the infinitive form.

Higher tier

Worked Example

You are writing an article for your school website about social issues.
Write approximately 90 words in German.
You must write something about each bullet point.

Mention:

  • a social problem in your area

  • something you have done to help others

  • how you plan to help others in the future

Answer:

In my town there are many people who are unemployed, and I find that very serious. The costs are high, and many families cannot afford a flat. Although the problem is big, many citizens are trying to help.

Last month I worked voluntarily in a project where we gave food to poor families. I enjoyed it very much, because I believe that one must do more for others.

In the future I would like to have more time for social projects and collect money in order to improve the situation. I believe that every person has the responsibility to help others.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure your answer covers all three time frames - present, past and future - to match the three bullet points

  • Use subordinating conjunctions like weil and obwohl to add complexity and push your mark up
