Section C: Higher Writing

  • Section C involves writing a 150-word response in German

  • You are given two questions to choose from but you must only answer one of them

  • The questions will be from different topics - ask yourself which you feel most confident with and which you can say more about

150-word question

  • This question is worth 25 marks

  • You are given a topic and two bullet points to cover

  • You should address both bullet points to access the full range of marks

  • You don't have to cover each bullet point equally, as long as you mention each one

  • A strong knowledge of tenses is essential - the bullet points are designed to elicit different time frames

  • Typically, the first bullet point focuses on the present, while the second focuses on either the past or the future

  • It is useful to briefly plan your ideas before starting - note down key ideas and/or vocabulary you want to use

  • To achieve the highest marks, focus on including:

    • a variety of vocabulary and structures (e.g. using and combining different tenses, using complex language such as Higher-tier only grammar)

    • a lot of information (e.g. narrating events by adding more detail, talking about others rather than just yourself, expanding as much as possible on key ideas)
