My Home: Exam Skills (AQA GCSE German): Revision Note
Exam code: 8662
The topic of 'My Home' can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to listen to someone describing where they live, talk about your own home and neighbourhood, or read and write about what makes a good place to live
Let's use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them
My home: listening
In the listening exam, there will be questions where you listen to someone speaking and answer questions in English
These questions will help you to practise this
Foundation tier
Worked Example
You hear Mathilda talking about her home. Answer the questions in English.
Where does Mathilda live?
What does she say about the size of her home?
What does she particularly like about her home?
What does she say about her neighbourhood?
Answers:
In a house in the countryside / not far from a small village
It is quite big / it has five rooms
the garden
It is very quiet
Examiner Tips and Tricks
In questions like these, you do not need to write full sentences - clear, accurate answers in English are enough
Read each question carefully before the recording plays so you know exactly what information to listen out for
The answers follow the same order as the questions
Higher tier
Worked Example
You hear Maximilian talking about his home and where he lives. Answer the questions in English.
What type of home does Maximilian live in?
What does he say about the location?
What does he like about living there? Give two details.
What problem does he mention?
What would he prefer in the future?
Answers:
A flat / apartment
It is in the city centre / everything is nearby
Any two from: you can easily get the bus; the city is active / lively; there is always something to do
The flat is small and has no garden
He would like to live in a house with a large garden
Examiner Tips and Tricks
If a question asks for two details, make sure you give both to earn full marks
Speakers will not always use simple, predictable vocabulary, so focus on understanding the overall meaning rather than individual words
If you miss something on the first listen, stay calm and use the second listen to fill in any gaps
My home: speaking
In part 3 of the speaking exam, you will describe two photos and then answer questions within the theme of 'Communication and the world around us'
Here are some questions to help you practise answering questions about your home

We have five rooms - a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms. I have my own room.Wie ist deine Umgebung? What is your neighbourhood like?
My neighbourhood is very quiet and clean. I like it because it is so lovely.
Higher tier
Worked Example
Sample teacher questions and answers:
Beschreib dein Zuhause. Describe your home.
I live in a house, not far from the city centre. The house is quite big - we have six rooms and a small garden. I find our house very lovely and modern, although it is sometimes a bit noisy because we live next to a road. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your neighbourhood?
A big advantage is that my neighbourhood is very quiet and safe. There are parks and forests nearby. A disadvantage however is that there are not many restaurants or cinemas nearby - you have to take the bus into town. In the future I might prefer to live in the city centre.Welche Rolle spielt das Internet in deinem Alltag? What role does the internet play in your daily life?
The internet plays a very big role in my daily life. I use it every day to find information and stay in contact with friends. Without the internet it would be very difficult to do many things - for example homework or buying clothes online. However, I think you have to be careful not to spend too much time online because it can be dangerous.Möchtest du in der Zukunft in einem anderen Land leben? Warum oder warum nicht? Would you like to live in another country in the future? Why or why not?
That is an interesting question. On the one hand I find the idea very exciting - it would be great to learn a new language and experience another culture. On the other hand I would be very sad without my family and friends. I think I would rather stay in England, but perhaps go abroad for a year to gain new experiences.
Examiner Tips and Tricks
Never just answer yes or no - always extend your answer with a reason using weil, an opinion using ich finde, or extra detail
At Foundation tier, even a simple extension like weil es ruhig ist shows good structure
At Higher tier, aim to use a range of tenses - refer to the past (früher habe ich…) and future (in der Zukunft möchte ich…) as well as the present, and use obwohl to show a contrasting point
My home: reading
In the reading exam, there will be questions where you need to match statements to the correct person
Read each text carefully - there may be more statements than people, so you will not use all of them
These questions will help you to practise this
Foundation tier
Worked Example
Three young people are writing about their homes on a German school website.
Match the correct person to each statement below.
Write A for Anna, F for Felix or S for Sophie.

Examiner Tips and Tricks
Read all three texts fully before answering any questions
Some statements may seem to apply to more than one person, for example, both Anna and Sophie live in quiet areas, so read carefully for the specific detail in each statement
You can use each letter more than once, so don't assume each person will only appear once in the answers
Higher tier
Worked Example
Four young people are writing about their homes and neighbourhoods in a German magazine.
Match the correct person to each statement.
Write T for Tobias, K for Klara, M for Markus or J for Julia.

Examiner Tips and Tricks
At Higher tier, the texts use more complex language and opinions may be expressed indirectly
Look out for synonyms - for example, zu Fuß erreichen (to reach on foot) is the same idea as walking to places
Also look for contrast words like jedoch (however) and trotzdem (nevertheless) - these signal that a second, different point is coming, which may be the one the question is testing
If you see a glossed word marked with an asterisk, its meaning is given at the bottom of the text - use it to help you understand the passage
My home: writing
Foundation tier
In the writing exam, you will be asked to write approximately 90 words in German, covering three bullet points
You must write something about each bullet point.
The same question appears in both Foundation and Higher tier
Worked Example
You are writing a blog post about your home for a German school website.
Write approximately 90 words in German.
You must write something about each bullet point.
Mention:
what your home is like
something you did at home recently
where you would like to live in the future
Sample answer of approximately 90 words:
I live with my parents in a house not far from school. There are four rooms and a cellar. I find our house practical because school is very nearby. My room is small but I really like it.
Last week we invited friends to our home. We ate together and listened to music. That was a lot of fun.
In the future I would like to live in a modern flat in the city centre because life there is very interesting. I would also like to have a garden.
Examiner Tips and Tricks
The three bullet points always cover present, past and future
Make sure each paragraph clearly addresses one bullet point
Higher tier
In the writing exam, you will be asked to write approximately 150 words in German, covering two bullet points in depth
The first bullet point is always present tense, and the second is a different tense
You are expected to develop your ideas fully and use a range of vocabulary and structures
Worked Example
You are writing an article about homes and housing for a German magazine.
Write approximately 150 words in German.
You must write something about each bullet point.
Mention:
what your home and neighbourhood are like
whether you would like to live somewhere different in the future, and why
Sample answer of approximately 150 words:
I live in an old house not far from the city centre. The house has six rooms and a small garden, which I like very much. My neighbourhood is quiet and safe, and there are parks and forests nearby where I like to go walking. A disadvantage however is that there are not many shops nearby and you have to take the train or the bus. Nevertheless I think that living in the countryside has many advantages.
In the future I might prefer to live in a flat in the city centre, because life there would be more active and interesting. It would be practical to be able to reach everything on foot. On the other hand I find the peace and nature in the countryside very important and lovely. It is difficult to decide, but I think that one day I would like to move to a bigger city. My family and friends all live here, which is very important to me.
Examiner Tips and Tricks
At Higher tier, you are expected to develop each bullet point in depth - aim for a full paragraph on each
Use a range of structures: weil clauses, obwohl, trotzdem, infinitive constructions with zu, and the conditional (würde + infinitive) to show sophisticated language
The examiner is looking for complexity and accuracy, so take care with your verb endings, word order and case endings
