There are many differences between the German and English school system:

  • Students generally don’t wear a uniform to school

  • They buy their own stationery supplies (e.g. exercise books, pens, folders)

  • Schools often finish early (around 1–2 pm)

  • After primary school, students attend secondary school from around age 10

  • There are different types of secondary school:

    • das Gymnasium (more academic school, leads to university)

    • die Realschule (mid-level secondary school)

    • die Hauptschule (more vocational)

    • die Gesamtschule (comprehensive school)

  • The grading system in Germany goes from 1 (very good) to 6 (very poor)

  • If a student's Zeugnis (report) at the end of the school year shows failing grades, they may have to repeat the entire year - a practice known as sitzen bleiben, which literally means 'to stay seated'
