The topic of 'Future Plans: Studying’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to talk about your own ambitions and plans after school, or to understand what others say about their options after finishing school. Let’s use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them.

Future plans: studying: listening

  • In the listening exam, you may be asked to identify the positive and negative aspects of a topic

  • This question will help you to practise identifying advantages and disadvantages

Worked Example

You hear Nina talking about going to university. Answer the questions in English.

00:00
  1. According to Nina, what are two advantages of going to university?

  2. According to Nina, what are two disadvantages of going to university?

Answers:

  1. You can find a good job later [1], you can meet new people [1]

  2. It costs a lot of money [1]; you don't live at home [1]

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Look for positive and negative language to help you identify advantages and disadvantages

  • Identify key signal words such as Vorteile (advantages) and Nachteile (disadvantages)

  • Vorteile signals that the positive points are coming, and Nachteile signals the switch to negatives

  • Adjectives like teuer (expensive) and schwierig (difficult) also help you identify the disadvantages even if you miss the signal word

Future plans: studying: speaking

In part 1 of the speaking exam, you will take part in a role-play. Your teacher plays the part of your friend and will speak first. Each task must include at least one verb to score full marks.

  • The role-play lasts between 1 and 1.5 minutes

  • You need to prepare answers to the prompts

  • You need to ask your teacher a question when you see the ? symbol

  • Each response must include a verb, but you don't need to develop your sentences fully like you would in conversation tasks

This question will help you to respond to role-play prompts on the topic of future plans and studying.

Worked Example

Prepare the following role-play.

  1. Say what your favourite school subject is and why. (Give two details.)

  2. Give an opinion about one of your teachers. (Give one detail.)

  3. Say something that you have done recently at school. (Give one detail.)

  4. Say what you would like to study in future. (Give one detail.)

  5. ? Ask your friend a question about going to university.

Answers:

Here are some example responses.

1. Mein Lieblingsfach ist Biologie, weil es sehr interessant ist.
2. Mein Deutschlehrer ist streng, aber gerecht.
3. Gestern habe ich eine Prüfung geschrieben.
4. In der Zukunft möchte ich Erdkunde studieren.
5. Ist es wichtig, zur Universität zu gehen?

1. My favourite subject is biology, because it is very interesting.
2. My German teacher is strict but fair.
3. Yesterday I sat an exam.
4. In the future, I would like to study geography.
5. Is it important to go to university?

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Every response must include a verb, even a short answer like Mein Deutschlehrer ist streng, aber fair scores marks because it contains one

  • When you see the ? symbol, keep your question simple and relevant - Was ist dein Lieblingsfach? is perfectly acceptable

  • You don't need to produce complex sentences for every task; a clear, accurate short response will always score better than a long, error-filled one

Future plans: studying: reading

Higher tier

  • In the Higher reading exam, Section A requires you to answer comprehension questions in English

  • Longer texts may use a range of tenses and higher-tier vocabulary

  • Read the whole text before answering, and make sure your answer gives precisely what the question asks for - no more, no less

Worked Example

Sarah is writing a blog post about her future plans. Answer the questions in English.

  1. What does Sarah plan to do after her A levels, and why? [2 marks]

  2. Give two disadvantages of university that Sarah mentions. [2 marks]

  3. Why does Klara prefer an apprenticeship? [2 marks]

  4. What does Sarah consider most important, and why? [2 marks]

Answers:

  1. Study biology at university / because she wants to become a scientist

  2. You have to work very hard / the pressure before exams is huge / the costs are very high / many students don't have enough money

  3. She can earn a good salary quickly / she can have her own life [1+1]

  4. A good qualification/degree / so that she can be successful in her career later

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • For questions worth 2 marks, you need to give two pieces of information - one detail alone will only score 1 mark

  • The word Herausforderung ('challenge') signals that difficulties are about to be listed, so use it as a cue to read carefully what follows

Future plans: studying: writing

  • In the writing exam, you may be asked to write about your studies and future plans

  • At Foundation tier, you write approximately 90 words covering three bullet points

  • At Higher tier, you write approximately 150 words covering two bullet points, but in greater depth

Foundation tier

Worked Example

You are writing a post on a German school website about your studies and future plans.

Write approximately 90 words. Write something about all three bullet points:

  • what you study at school and your opinion

  • something you did at school recently

  • your plans after school

Answer:

Here is an example response of approximately 90 words.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • The three bullet points always appear in the same order: present, past, future - use this to plan quickly

  • Try to go beyond the minimum for each one: add a reason with weil, an opinion with ich finde, or an extra detail

  • Notice how the example adds ich hoffe, dass … in the past section - this type of structure shows range and will be rewarded

Higher tier

Worked Example

You are writing a post on a German school website about your studies and future plans.

Write approximately 150 words. Write something about both bullet points:

  • what you like or dislike about school

  • your plans for the future

Answer:

Here is an example response of approximately 150 words.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • At Higher tier, aim to develop every point fully - make a statement, give a reason with weil, and add a contrast or extra detail

  • Notice how obwohl, zum Beispiel and um … zu are used throughout the Higher response to create variety and complexity

  • Using a range of connectives like these is an effective way to push your mark up at Higher tier
