Section B: Writing

  • In Section B, the same question appears at both Foundation and Higher tier

  • It involves writing a 90-word response in German

  • You are given two questions to choose from but you must only answer one of them

  • The questions will be from different topics - ask yourself which you feel most confident with and which you can say more about

90-word question

  • This question is worth 15 marks

  • You are given a topic and three bullet points to cover

  • You should cover all three bullet points to access the full range of marks

  • You don't have to cover each bullet point equally, as long as you mention each one

  • A strong knowledge of tenses is essential, as the three bullet points will refer to three different time frames (past, present and future)

  • It is useful to briefly plan your ideas before starting - note down key ideas and/or vocabulary you want to use

  • To achieve the highest marks, focus on:

    • including a variety of vocabulary and structures (e.g. using and combining different tenses)

    • developing your answers (e.g. explaining your opinions, using connectives to link ideas)

    • including a good amount of information (e.g. narrating events by adding more detail, talking about others rather than just yourself)
