  • Define the mole.

Cards in this collection (7)

  • Define the mole.

    The mole is the amount of substance containing as many particles (e.g. atoms or molecules) as there are atoms in 12 g of carbon-12.

  • Define Avogadro's constant.

    Avogadro's constant (NA) is the number of atoms in 12 g of carbon-12, equal to 6.02 × 1023 mol-1.

  • State the equation relating the number of moles n to the number of molecules N.

    n = \frac{N}{N_{A}}

  • How is the molar mass of an element related to its relative atomic mass?

    One mole of any element has a mass, in grams, equal to its relative atomic mass.

  • For a compound, the molar mass is found by .......... the relative atomic masses of the atoms it contains.

    For a compound, the molar mass is found by adding together the relative atomic masses of the atoms it contains.

  • State the equation for the number of moles n in terms of mass m and molar mass Mr.

    n = \frac{m}{M_{r}}

  • True or False?

    Two different gases at the same temperature and pressure, with equal volumes, contain different numbers of molecules.

    False.

    When held under the same conditions, equal volumes of any two gases contain the same number of molecules.
